I think they realized people would be more unhappy with the price change, so they took less apples out to hold the price.
Yeah big mistake because now most people won't even buy it.

This sort of reminds me of 29 cent hamburgers and 39 cent cheeseburgers on Tuesdays and Thursdays back in the 90's. Good times.
Had burger eating contest with friends back then. Good times

Not much of a throwback. Pies have been 2/$1 frequently in modern times.

So you save $0.30 on a $1 purchase. Big whoop.

And, as someone else mentioned, if this were a true throwback, the pies would be fried.

The fried version was great junk food. The baked version is just junk.

I get nausea just thinking about it. We must've been really desperate back then.

At first glance the headline read, McDonald's Throwback Thursdays: Make Eligible Purchase of $1+, Get Baked

I was totally down to go hotbox in the parking lot, I know a lot of companies are super progressive these days. The Apple Pie ruined this deal. Thumbs down.

Yeah they changed the recipe to get rid of most of the apples and now call them fritters. They are more like apple flavored crust than real pies anymore. McDonald's really cheapened out on what use to be a decent product to keep the retail price the same.
I hadn't eaten at McDonalds in over a decade, but when I moved to Hawaii, I found out that they *never discontinued the old apple pies here [honolulumagazine.com].* That's right, the delicious, unhealthy fried pies that go back to the '60s. It's been a few years since I had one, but now I'm getting hungry... Highly doubt it is/was 20¢ here though!

Back in the day we went on a vacation to Nova Scotia. On our way to go whale watching in the bay of Fundy, we stopped in a town called Digby which is famous for their scallops. Low and behold, there was a sign on the golden arches that said "lobster rolls now available".

The only way to measure a quantity of McDonalds Cheeseburgers is by the Bag. You get 0 bags at 25 cents each so no deal.
