There are 8 IRS-partnered Free File providers [irs.gov] with varying requirements and features for filers with an AGI of $72,000 or less.
Unfortunately, HR Block is not a Free File partner this year which leaves TurboTax and TaxSlayer as the only "notable" Free File partners.
The TurboTax Free File Program [intuit.com] is like the TurboTax Free Edition but with many more features including support for most federal and state forms as well as free state filing (if you qualify for free federal filing). There are also no annoying upselling offers.
To be eligible for TurboTax Free File, you must be able to answer "yes" to any one of these questions:

(Personally, I use Credit Karma Tax but both are great deals)

The Free File Alliance is a group of companies that promised to offer free tax prep to most Americans (there's an AGI cut off) in exchange for the IRS not creating its own tax software service.
Although if it really is a year wait to get back your own money using paper, that could be a reason someone does efile.
You should at least do fillable forms. That allows you to enter the forms manually (essentially right into a PDF) and file that way.
