Thinner foam padding, so less heat retention

Contoured, waterfall seat edge, so less chance of numb legs after sitting for a long period

Lower friction armpads

Adjustable lumbar support

I got to try out both recently and I feel the Leap is much more comfortable. The biggest thing the gesture has over the leap (IMO) is the arm placement. With the gesture you get extreme control of how the arms are. And adjustment of the arms is extremely easy. I assume it's meant to be changed often.

With the leap, the seat and lumbar and back felt more supported and comfortable. The arm adjustability is fine enough for me, but the Gesture is a lot better. Leap arm adjustability is not bad at all. It's just nowhere near as convenient as the Gesture.

I should note that I only used the chairs from the office position and leaned back. I did not try it much with unusual sitting positions for which the Gesture is made for.

How does Leap compare to HM Aeron?
Hopefully someone who's tried both will answer. I only know doing research when I bought my first Leap 6 years ago, they were often compared. People love both. I got/get the impression either one is a good choice. But the mix of reviews and information I encountered happened to lead me to cautiously select Leap. I happily discovered it's very comfortable for long sessions of sitting.

How does Leap compare to HM Aeron?
I have a bad case of slouching. We have Leaps at our office and it's super easy to slouch in those. With my Aeron, it keeps me upright a lot longer but I'll still end up slouching and having to correct myself anyway. I think this has to do with Aeron's PostureFit mechanism on the back. I can adjust the lumbar support strength and I can feel the difference right away.

The back support with the Leap is good as well but the standard ones we have like the one being sold on Amazon doesn't seem to have as much customization with the back like my Aeron does.

There are some things I prefer more with the Leap like the chair height. I can get very low on a Leap. With the Aeron I was able to choose from 3 different sizes. I'm not super tall but I went with the B size chair. It's fine to sit in but I almost wish I went with the A size so I could go even lower like I can with the Leap at work.

Another thing I like about the Leap over the Aeron is the arm rests. The arms on my Aeron are at a fixed point BUT the armrests can turn toward your body. With the Leap, I can bring the arms closer to my body, turn the armrests, and extend the armrests out. I just feel more comfortable with how much more options I have with my arms on the Leap.

One downside about the Leap armrests is they seem a bit thinner construction wise compared to what Aeron uses. When you're adjusting yourself back up or easing yourself down into your chair, sometimes you're pressing your thumbs into the armrests. I've seen some of the Leap armrests at work have areas that are caved in either by fingers or maybe someone resting their elbow too long. The arm rests on my Aeron are much thicker than my Leap at work.

Now for another important aspect. Your bum. This Leap has a fabric bottom while the Aeron has a mesh one. Mesh has more breathability. If you're in a warmer climate, I'd go with an Aeron. When the office blasts AC during Summer, I'm glad to have the fabric seating in the Leap. Also have to mention the back of my Aeron is also mesh. I keep the house around low temps to help with the bills and my back doesn't stay as warm as it would if I had a fabric back like the Leap has.

If you fart...well this would be your own personal preference. I guess the mesh on an Aeron would let the fart pass right through. You might smell it faster but perhaps the seat won't retain the smell as long as the fabric would on a Leap. Leap's fabric bottom might also help damper your fart sound so this could be handy if you rip one on a conference call and forget to have the mute on. If you're in an Aeron, it's going to sound more audible.

With these chairs, I try not to lean back too far but sometimes you're stuck on an assignment, don't want to get up and lose focus but still need to stretch a bit. I found I'm able to lean back a lot more on a Leap than I am with my Aeron.

Another thing I like about the Leap is being able to sit cross-legged. I can still do this on an Aeron but it's not as comfy doing it on the mesh chair with the plastic framing. On a Leap, the whole seat is fabric so it's nice and soft on the sides of your legs. Being able to push the arm rests away and lean back while cross-legged is nice but might not be the best for your posture. Get the Aeron if you want to be strict on your posture.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head and from my own personal preferences.

For a tl;dr
  • Aeron: + Back support + Mesh + Multiple size options + Reduce fart smell + Better armrest material
  • Leap: + Armrests + Low height + Reduce fart noise + recline + cross-legged + cheaper

good chair, have one at work

remember to get up and walk, no chair will resolve or prevent impending posture and leg issues. if you have trouble slouching, remember to sit at the edge of your seat once in a while to engage your core and upper back muscles.

I am curious, on the steel case site there are 3 options of fabric. Any ideas how they differ and which is best?

I watched a few videos of the blind testing of office chairs, and when I do need to replace mine, I'll look at the hyken, dexley or something in the $250 range mesh from Amazon.

The blind testers didn't really like the aeron.

are these chairs fully loaded? reading the description it does say it comes with the fully adjustable arms but what about the additional lumbar support? I also wish they had one with the headrest

It mentions adjustable lumbar in the Amazon description. It's listed behind the third bullet point. It's also shown in the Amazon pictures, though I understand pictures alone shouldn't be used as proof. ...since they're often incorrect. It's just a slider thingy that goes up and down, resulting in different focus/intensity/location of available lumbar support.
