I typically use Google Maps or Waze on my work or personal smartphone for navigation, but I own one of these lifetime traffic and maps units. I keep it in the glovebox of my car. You'd be surprised at how useful this can be if you lose/damage your phone, or if you end up in a region without cellular service and have no idea where you are. One of these saved my bacon when I was deep in the Adirondacks and there was no cellular service to speak of.

(Smartphones have smaller GPS antennas that can take longer to attain a lock; normally the reason they lock much faster is because they get Assisted GPS information via the cellular network, which doesn't help if you're not in cellular service.)

Many GPS apps incl. Google Maps will only offline select regions, which can leave you with your pants down if you don't offline the area in advance. (Again, exceptions apply; HERE WeGo allows you to offline the entirety of the US (with some other countries as part of the North American package).

These devices still have their place, even if smartphone navigation has advantages in everyday use.
That won't work for a lot of people - myself included. I need access to my phone, as a phone, during my drives. Many people need a dedicated GPS, a larger screen, etc.
oh shiz here we go again...

Which maps are included? Only U.S. or Canada and Mexico or even global maps (like for a trip to Europe) as well?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. Is this really better than a cheap phone and google maps? I haven't used my Garmin GPS for at least 5 years, especially after google allowed offline maps.

yes its a dumb question.

You are just wrong on this statement, I'm pretty sure more than 50% carry a phone everywhere, just saying.

No. I use Garmin for many years but now it's time for the end. The GPS on cell phone can tell me the traffic, blockage, weather conditions immediately. The Google offline mode for smart phone is very cool.

There are some nightmare stories about Google map steering people into wrong direction. Last year bunch of cars trying to go to an airport got stuck in mud when Google map all directed those people to take a short cut into private property. I don't hear that kind of thing with stand-alone GPS.

What do you guys recommend for an aftermarket traffic receiver cable? The one in Garmin's website costs about 60% of the entire unit.

When traveling in unknown areas like desert, always good to have a backup. I got the Garmin 52 off amazon for 42 dollars and have it as backup. refurbished but works fine and has lifetime maps.

So if your phone fails or you did not download maps...42 bucks is a nice insurance policy.

Some remote areas ...you are all alone.

57 bucks now. Price fluctuates.

Thanks, this is cheaper than Ebay.

Ooops this is a power cable not a power/digital traffic receiver cable. Thanks anyway.

I have a Garmin Drivesmart 55 and when my drove my son (cancer patient) home from the hospital in Indianapolis back home to Detroit MI he tried to convince me to use google maps from his phone. Having been a salesman that travel down to Indianapolis from Detroit on many, many, many occasions using my Garmin 55 I looked at the comparisons and told him google was wrong. Google maps said it would save us 45 mins. I said no way. Since I was the driver, I used my Garmin and the end result was that we saved 30 minutes over Google!

And, this has occurred in many other situations as I have experimented with Google maps on my phone vs using my Garmin device. Garmin is more intuitive and more accurate than Google. Just saying!
How can you know if you didn't do the route both ways?
Look at the destination times.
Google takes into account all the cars on the road using it. Not so much with GPS
GPS makes no adjustment for traffic and stop lights. Google does

TA20 or GMT 60 cable? Both support traffic, google for the difference

Mine came with a TA 20
