Bought this last time around and it's a quality bag, much thicker more comfortable straps for your shoulders and the material is much more durable feeling. Definitely better quality than the $20 entry nike/adidas at your local supermarket.

What's the appeal for bags like this over backpack with normal straps? Genuinely curious

Yes. I have an older model of this bag that I use for hiking. They are not meant for heavy things. A water bottle, jacket and somewhere to hold your phone and keys.

I like them because they pack well in a suitcase. When I go on short adventures on trips, I can carry a bottle and some small things in one of these. My regular backpack is too big and bulky. I also use it at home when running errands on my bike.

I bought this last time it was a deal around Christmas. I think it was 10 then. It's a great solid day pack for hiking or running around and you need a light bag

These seem to be popular with the younger folks nowadays. I think the string straps are seen as more casual or carefree than the thick straps necessary for a backpack actually loaded with textbooks.

Ironically, it is plausible to deny this product is a "backpack" is the traditional sense.

But let's not overthink this.....

Quality string pack, I only wish they had a dedicated slot for a water bottle. Pretty annoying without one especially since you usually use them with water bottles in mind.

Got one last year. Durable and waterproof, but guess it's small to hike with for long-distance and my gears.
