Microsoft has recently announced that the price of Xbox Live Gold is going up. The $60 1 year membership will now be $60 for a 6 month membership. If you are subscribed at the current rate they will honor a renew at your old price.
Retailers are now carrying the new $60 6 month cards. You can get ahead by stocking up on the old cards at their original price points being the price hike. This will make the gamepass trick more expensive too at the new price points, so now is the time.
I've provided a few good prices below. Take advantage while you can.
Costco: 2 years for $95.00

Target: 1 year for $59.99

Amazon: 1 year for $59.99

People keep saying 30 for PSN plus but thats a lie, they are the same MSRP. Link (current) to get a year of PSN for 30? I'm sure you wont supply one. If anything you'll link some now expired deal. For that matter people are still talking about $42 for Brazil VPN Live 12 month subs in this very thread. Shall we claim Live is $42 for a year?
Look people, Biden is president now, and even before him inflation was through the roof. Prices are going up. Trillions in stimulus will see to that. You cant even buy a console or a video card anywhere. The country is awash in fake paper money.
Sony copies pretty much everything Microsoft does (for example, PSN used to be free, now it's pay just like Live) so dont be surprised if Sony moves to a higher price soon as well.
However for MS I see this plain and simple as a move to force/entice everybody to gamepass. If I'm not mistaken GP is generally about $10 a month, so there's just no reason to get Vanilla Live anymore. We know Gamepass is their heavy bet for the future. I'm not 100% sold on it, but it is what it is.
And to all those people crowing that PS5 is selling so much better...yeah so? That's because of Europe and Japan. Here in the USA they are typically pretty close. Both are constantly sold out everywhere. Xbox is more powerful this gen, so dont be surprised if in the long run it outsells PS5 in the USA. Just like 360 crushed PS3. Xbox One was a dog (low power, Kinect, initial high price). Series X is not.
Personally I got the ultimate gamepass for $1, it was like 2 yrs at the time but time flies and it ends in August I believe. More than likely I'll add a $10 GP sub to my subs at that time. I already gave in to paying $14 a month for Amazon Prime after holding out for years. It is what it is. OTOH I recently cut my internet bill from $100 to 50, my car insurance from 280 every 6 months to 150, etc. So it's a "shrug", have to look at all sides.
Also I expect a lot of people are shortsighted and dont really differentiate between $60 for a year and $60 for 6 months. They'll go spend the same 60 dollars and think "i'm covered for a long time", psychological. That's why MS eliminated year cards, because $120 for a year would have felt much worse, even though in the end it's the same thing.
I'm not even saying this is a good move. I'm not thrilled with a lot of Xbox management, as a longtime Xbox fanboy (I hate the Series S too, long story). Just pointing out the other side.
They are betting on Gamepass. I'm not in love with GP as it doesn't necessarily fit my game consumption habits (I play very few games besides Destiny, and prefer to buy 1-3 Triple A titles a year and dont play them that much), but it is what it is. It's arguably a great value.

If I were to buy him a year of online...can it wait a couple weeks or even a month to actually start the year (because of the xbox being out of stock)?
Also, hopefully this isn't a stupid question. If I bought him 2 one year things...if he redeems both of them, will it be for 2 years?
I posted the conversion chart in the wiki.
Do you have Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, or Ultimate Game Pass? The difference matters.
12mo has already gone away, Microsoft announced that back in July I believe.
I posted the conversion chart in the wiki, but yes 12mo EA = 4mo Ultimate.
Yes, and Ultimate includes Gold. I quite frankly don't understand the people that don't want Ultimate.
Sounds like you already are, 36 months is the max.
Yes.
I blame Biden.
There have been several restocks for those paying attention.
Yes, the codes should not expire and assuming the 1:1 conversion is still active at that point you should be able to re-upgrade if you wish to.
Get 36 months worth now, wait until your Ultimate expires, add the 36 months of Gold then re-upgrade.
I've had a feeling for quite some time that they were wanting to push people to Ultimate. The rumors of Gold going away were clearly 100% WRONG and it doesn't surprise me that they've raised the price of Gold to push people into getting Ultimate now that it's just about the same price.
Took advantage of the $1 deal a while back that turned my LIVE into gamer pass
