Seagate Expansion Desktop Hard Drive 12TB HDD External Hard Drive USB 2.0 & 3.0 Black STEB12000400 Free Shipping - $189.99

It appears to be shuckable, but will probably damage the case - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0DevtBXP6A [youtube.com]

I believe this is meant as an archive drive and not meant to be spinning 24x7 in a NAS.

EDIT: It appears these may in fact be Exos, Iron Wolf, or Barracuda Pros, which would be better for NAS work... I can't verify that myself, but it seems that Seagate does not make 12TB models in their archive version. See this post and Seagate's Website [seagate.com].

Works out to $15.83 per TB.

Also available from Adorama - https://www.adorama.com/setb12000400.html > temporarily on backorder, still available to order
Also available from B&H Photo Video - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...p_usb.html > expected availability 2-4 weeks, but you can order now and it will ship when available

Not stellar deal, but best current price... For anyone unaware, 14tb WD easystore was this same price several times in recent months. If you don't *need* one now, I would wait.
Problem is that it hasn't been at the price since Black Friday. Sure you can hold out but you have no idea when that price will return.

What makes you say it's not meant to be on 24/7?

How does this compare to the 12TB Western Digital on the FP today?

I mean it's not meant to be spinning 24x7. I.E. not suitable for a NAS drive that will be spinning 24x7.

I bet it will be okay to be plugged in inside its USB case 24x7 as it will likely spin down when not active. I have not verified that though.

EDIT: Appears these may be Exos, Iron Wolf, or Barracuda Pros - all non SMR and suitable for NAS use. I can't verify myself.

These are SMR iron wolf drives inside. Meaning they are exactly made for NAS 24x7 use

I think you mean CMR. Seagate doesn't make an SMR drive over 8TB.

From what I can find, these drives are either Ironwolf or Barracuda Pro drives. Both are suitable for 24/7 use (NAS or DAS). The only instance I saw with an archive drive (the first review on Newegg) was for the 8TB model.

It appears that jason is right. Looks like Iron Wolf or Barracuda Pro and not an Archive drive. I don't have the drive to test that, but based on Seagate's Website [seagate.com], it doesn't appear they make internal hard drives this large other than enterprise or those two - all non-SMR.

EDIT: I saw mention of Exos drives for a 16TB on Reddit [reddit.com].

What is an actual FP price per TB for an external HD over 8TB?
Slightly tired of seeing in every thread over 8TB "not a spectacular price." I'm not in a rush as I still have space left on my 5TB (just for storing raw video editing files) but definitely want to upgrade within a couple months.

Hard drive prices have increased over the last couple years, but it seems like anything under $15 per TB would be considered a good deal. This one is borderline, but may be pretty good if it has the better drives in it talked about here (which appears to be the case).

This drive is also available from Adorama [adorama.com] and B&H Photo [bhphotovideo.com] if anyone prefers them to Newegg.

True enough. Straight from Seagate [seagate.com]. All indications are that these are going to be high quality drives inside.
