The Osprey Daylite is my favorite 15L backpack for day hikes. The harness is simple and very comfortable for loads up to 15 pounds or so. The Daylight PLus is around 22L and also great but again only comfortable up to 15 pounds. I don't think either pack would work well for school/office use. This price is not bad but you can usually get this pack used like-new for less at Amazon Warehouse.
