That range is only attainable in outer space with clear line of sight.
I've a pair that gets about a mile at the most on earth.

Pretty much what he said .....though if you are on a mountain top you can get a few miles sometimes..... maybe..... I really do not know how they can advertise these as 25 miles or any walkie-talkie for that matter with the range that they do because they're completely off.

I have one. It works well for 200 feet but fails in one mile.
Any other products to recommend for hiking?

That's why I came here, does anyone have good suggestions for radios for hiking, or even emergency go-bags?

Motorola DLR / DTR radios are great but can be expensive, They have great range on the 900mhz ism band & are license free.

MURS radios are also great, they're license free as well and work well outdoors since they operate on VHF bands.

Baofeng-like UHF clones are $8-15 each on eBay and Amazon. I've dropped many in lakes while fishing and when overbeveraged. At that price, its quite affordable. Programming them to US legal FRS and GMRS frequencies takes only seconds with the free CHIRP software and a $5 USB programming cable.

No license required on channels 1-7 (high or low power) & 8-14 (forced on low power). Channels 15-22 are GMRS - licensed channels

This is true, but Baofengs are illegal to operate on FRS / GMRS frequencies and pretty much anywhere else outside of the ham bands. Either ways, plenty of people still use them regardless of the fact. YMMV

Baofengs are legal. Oh, and nobody cares. Nobody, including the FCC, gives a rats a** about 2-watt radio transceivers that broadcast on the actual designate Family Radio Service (FRS) frequencies. All I know is that for $150 you can get TWENTY Baofeng UHF two-way radios.
