was debating picking this up over the winter sale, the story looks great, but the gameplay is what's holding me back. Reminds of the Ys or star ocean gameplay

I would say it is a solid game, but not as good as the first one. Ya I would suggest for anyone to watch gameplay videos of the combat before playing.

It's a different story than the Netflix show that came out after the games. I recommend playing in succession. 1st game was the best. A third game is also being developed too.

Have 100% both NNK1 and NNK2. Both phenomenal games in their own right. Prefer the first, but the second does improve on a lot of the first's shortcomings. The combat is MUCH better in 2, but they do completely cut out the creature collection from 1.. Either way, both are great and are an absolute steal at $10 for NNK2 and $15 for NNK1:R. Highly, highly recommended. (Ni No Kuni is one of my favorite game series' of all time.)
