Spyderco Sage 1 Maxamet $160 after coupon SAGE1. This appears to have been a black friday deal that Indiana Knives left active.
I got in on the Benchmade Bugout deal last month (
https://slickdeals.net/e/14714459-benchmade-bugout-gray-g10-axis-lock-3-2-knife-black-150-free-s-h - my first pocket knife!), and that has led me down a deep dark rabbit hole of knife forums and youtube videos that has let me to this point.
Spyderco seems to be the most popular production knife brand (with Benchmade not far behind), known for their unique designs (i.e. ugly and weird but they kinda grow on you), great production quality, and willingness to push the envelope with interesting steels.
This particular knife is the Sage 1 - (not one of their more popular knives like the PM2 and Para 3) - Sage is a series of otherwise identical knives that each use a different locking mechanism. This one uses a liner lock. What makes this knife special is the Maxamet blade steel, which I believe is a Spyderco exclusive with just about the best edge retention on the market, other than say tungsten carbide (which isn't steel). The 20CV steel used in the Benchmade deal is also very high end, but Maxamet is in another tier. Of note, however, Maxamet is not corrosion resistant. Spyderco has a bunch of factories around the world with many of their knives made in Golden, CO. This particular model is made in Taichung, Taiwan, another of their facilities that's also known for particularly excellent production quality.
Anyway, I received this knife today and it is so great. If like me, you caught the bug from that Benchmade deal last month, this one won't disappoint!

CTS XHP and Cruwear are two great alternatives to S30V. 154CM and CPM154 are terrific, as well, but will need touching up or stropping more often.
I'm tempted. Is this knife worth this much money?

1) watch a lot of YouTube videos, in particular metal_complex's videos about his Maxamet Para 3 - there's a bunch of videos where he talks about it, like how it was his most carried edc of 2020 in this one - https://youtu.be/ATv0Yvw3FNk That piqued my interest, and I looked up a bunch more Maxamet content like a video of a guy cutting a rope 1000 times https://youtu.be/9uJPtm5LX5k , etc. (Vamos!'s comment above is so right - this is seriously an addiction haha). I have small/medium hands so I was thinking a smaller super steel knife just like his Para 3 might be a good next choice.
2) I casually searched for Maxamet knives/deals, /r/knifedeals on reddit seems like the best source for good knife deals. I found a post from the owner of IndianaKnives from black Friday (i.e. before I became obsessed). In classic SD fashion I clicked through the expired deal "just in case" and it worked!
3) then I watched a bunch more videos, about this specific knife as well as the Sage line in general. This got me more pumped, so I finally pulled the trigger.
4) it arrived today and is even better than expected! Much more polished than the blade hq bugout out of the box (much sharper, smoother action, just feels like a more premium knife). The bugout is lighter and has more flashy touches like the cerakoted blade and the green hardware, but the Sage feels higher quality. I thought I wouldn't like the liner lock as much because I wouldn't be able to hold the lock and flick open and closed and my finget would be in the way of the blade closing, but I think i may actually like it better. Just feels like a more natural position to put your hand in when closing the knife. Since it brought me so much joy, I figured I would share with the SD community in case others might like it too. It warms my heart that others in this community followed the same journey as me following the bugout deal and I think it's awesome that yall bought out all the stock of this knife in the first hour after I posted. Makes me really happy.
Anyway, if you're up for it I'd suggest you watch a bunch of YouTube, see if you get just as jazzed about the Maxamet Sage as I did. If so, go for it! Otherwise maybe hold out for something else - maybe you want something bigger or smaller or with a different locking mechanism, blade shape, steel, etc. I love the bugout, especially once it it broke in after a couple weeks, but I love the Sage even more straight out of the box, but that's just me. Good luck!
Edit: oh also if you're patient, you may want to hold out for spyderco's factory seconds sale. Not sure when the next one is, and apparently they're brutal (website crashes, etc), but I think in the past they've pm2/para 3 Maxamet knives for like $80 with imperceptible flaws, so maybe some of this knife will be available in the next one!

And can anyone explain what the hole is for in the knife blade?
