Each year I look for software to file my taxes for free. Last year H&R Block had an offer, I liked it, but I don't see it this year.
This year I discovered the
IRS webpage that lists several providers of free software [irs.gov], based on age and
Adjusted
Gross
Income.
Make sure to review these offers carefully. Not all of them give free state filing. Not all of them support all forms.
I ended up using
TaxAct Free File Edition [taxact.com] because:
- It offered free state tax form
- It supported Schedule E (Rental Property)
- It supported Schedule SE (Self Employed)
TaxAct worked perfectly, no 'gotchas', no trying to upsell me to a paid version.
ProTip: Remember, by contributing to things like 401(k), IRA, HSA, you bring down your Adjusted Gross Income, and will qualify for these free file offers.

Enjoy!

OP, ProTip for you: the less you assume in the post title, the better.

OP, thanks for the deal.
Make sure at the bottom of the TaxAct free file landing page to click on the "Do Not Sell My Personal Information" banner and fill out the opening form. Otherwise, bustards will sell your guts out.
Also, when you finished your State tax did it charge for e-filing?
Many tax preparing software let you prepare State tax for free but when it comes time to e-file both Fed and State taxes charging you for State tax e-file.
