This is a wonderful book if you desire to never trust any person for any reason again. I can summarize it for you: Nobody does anything for you ever. Everything they do is for them. The different personality types determine the specific reason why individuals are serving themselves..but alll individuals are serving themselves.
While this may be true (though I can think of a few examples where a person gave their life with nothing to gain but the satisfaction of saving others), it does remove all the magic from the world.. So weigh whether you want to see people through that bland lens.. I couldn't get to the end of it. It was just a big ol ball of negativity.
Just throwing this out there, you can download a lot of these books/ audio books that show up on S.D. via the Libby app from your local library for free. (library accounts required) May not be available at all library's but I just checked ours and both versions book and audio are available to borrow.
Looks like a book I'll finally read instead of just collect and never think about again..."Buy Now."

Purchased May 26, 2020 for $1.60...Gol durn it.

That thesis fails under more recent research that people have a native impulse to help and support others. Two bucks please.

His other popular book was 48 Laws of Power. I listened to the audible version of this and it was pretty useful as a self-help book to apply in mostly professional situations. Especially if you think you have low emotional intelligence or trouble reading people it provides a nice framework for personality traits, biases, and flaws in human nature. I'd read it again.

That pretty well sums it up, and sadly it's not too far from the truth based on our innate behavioral coding.

I would like to see that research. Do you have a link? I bet at it's core it's tied to our dopamine system. Helping others gives us a shot of dopamine which makes us feel good which is ultimately what drives our desire to help others. I bet if you did a study where participants had their dopamine response suppressed while helping others, their desire to do so would go away as well which ultimately would align with the theory that everything we do is self serving, even if it does benefit others and society as a whole. I don't think that hypothesis and the idea that we have a 'native impulse to help and support others' are in conflict at all.
