Too many variables to consider, such as:

1) Speed of service
2) Distance of device from node
3) Max transmit rate from node to device

If you're using a WiFi 5 device, and you have a WiFi 5 mesh system, it could be just as fast or faster. WiFi 6 devices will connect to a WiFi 6 router like this at a higher transmit rate, but depending on the distance from node to device, overall throughput could be lower than if it was connected to a closer WiFi 5 mesh node.

But if you have a WiFi 6 mesh system, that rules above all at this point in time. You get max coverage and max transmit rates. Hopefully you have at least Gigabit service from your ISP to take advantage of it, because you'll be ISP limited at anything 500Mbps or less (that's where WiFi 5 systems max out).

would this be a significant upgrade from netgear X 8 R8500?

The RAX80 gets pretty good reviews so this must be similar - it's tempting. But tough to pull trigger when the pretty comparable Asus RT-AX86U is regular price $250, especially since I have a bunch of other AI Mesh-compatible routers running already. Tough choice!
Throwing out the AX82U for your consideration as well. After doing a lot of reading and being able to get it cheaper than the 86U I dont regret it one bit. In fact it restored my faith in Asus again. Also helps if looks pretty cool.

Good deal, but when will these routers have 2.5gbe wired ports? Sigh.
Tri-band is useful if you have 5ghz network saturation. It's 2 x 5ghz and 1 x 2.4ghz. If you have many streaming tv's and computers, for example.

It doesn't help with coverage area. You do mesh networking for that.

My nighthawk AX4300 died 2 days ago, kinda hesitate, and I read somewhere 2.4 ghz band not that good for some of early built. I went with Linksys Velop AX4200.
I bought the Netgear AX5400 router and it didn't work well. I opted for the Lynksis Velop AX4200 two-pack at Costco. So far the Velop has work well and reliably. I don't believe it is the fastest but it works with al my devices. Also, the netgear had a hard time with my smart lightbulb. The velop had no connectivity issues. I do believe it has much room for improvement and hopefully firmware updates do that. I've heard lynksis sometimes abandons product updates, which is not promising but I bought it at Costco, so I'll keep it for now.

Gonna wait for 6E to go down in price. 6 is good, but doesn't warrant an upgrade from a good 5 router.

Is this is one that the range isn't the greatest on? According to wirecutter? Nice price tho.

I would take the Asus over Netgear, because Asus' admin panel is so much nicer, unless Netgear has updated since the R7000p, I had.

And just to round it off, for max bandwidth(wi-fi 6) and coverage(mesh), you'd want to do something like netgear's Orbi with Wi-Fi 6 (RBK852) AX6000. But it ain't cheap. It's $350 per node/router.

No way Jose! Nice things are expensive but if I can't feel the difference in my use case. I see no need.
