Unless your gear is dialed in for a 38 it will likely be too small for most. If your gear is compact (and light) enough to go down to the 38 I would just make the leap to an ultralight pack from one of the smaller manufacturers if weight is your primary goal.

This pack weighs about 2.5 lbs.

Assuming this 38 can be carried on a plane? Hows about a 48?

EDIT: Most airlines allow bags up to 45 linear inches (length + width + depth) or 22" long, 14" wide, and 9" deep. This pack (M) is 29.13h x 15.75w x 11.81d in.

This deal is SMOKING. My wife is stoked. We've been eyeing resale for a while and people want $200+ for pre-owned Osprey.

Great deal, amazing company.

Awesome warranty. I had a fading issue (due to sun) and they sent me a replacement- just needed to show proof of purchase from 3 years ago.

38L is a good sweet spot. Perfect to carry extra gear for winter day hiking and big enough to carry tent, sleeping pad, and kitchen for summer overnight backpacking trips.

This pack would probably not be considered ultra light by most people today in the era of dyneema (DCF).

I'd be all over this if the Exos was a in Large.
I have 3 different Osprey packs of various sizes. Best packs out there for the money IMO.

I use the Exos 48 for solo camping. Great pack and very comfortable considering the light weight. I can fit everything inside (aside from tent poles which is more out of fear of tearing the bag) with the use of compression sacks. One thing to note - there aren't many small pockets inside this pack. If you like to keep small stuff stored and organized in the pack's compartments, this pack may annoy you.
