The reviews are accurate. The problem with this unit is that it will likely arrive damaged.

Regardless of the reviews, last summer I was in desperate need and ordered one from Amazon. Sure enough, as I helped the UPS driver yank it off the truck, I could tell it traveled over a rough road. Root cause: the packaging offers adequate protection for transporting a bag of socks but certainly not a large consumer appliance… just thin cardboard and maybe inch of foam on the base and the top corners. No padding. I kid you not. Ten-dollar toasters ship in a better packaging.

Amazon issued a full refund and neither wanted to replace it nor have me return it.
Banged up it is, yet by luck, its air tight and works well. It sits in the basement and serves a purpose, so the cosmetics are a non-issue for me.

Based on the posts I've read from several e-tailer sites, I believe they arrived from China unscathed as they are transported in mass quantities on a pallet. When the pallet arrives at your local Costco all is good. Its only problematic when shipping an individual unit. I don't fault the final delivery. The logistics are broken.
I would spend a bit more getting an upright freezer make your life a lot easier. I owned a chess freezer and most of the time it is a pain to dig things from the bottom of the freezer or if not it will just sit there forever.
In for one so I can tell others I have a Koolatron

I bought one last year and this description is perfect. Enough to pickup in store? Yeah. Ship? Hell no.

I remember I bought mine at Costco warehouse for $130 two years ago. It's called HiSense. It's also 7.0 cu ft. The packaging was so thin. The first one has a broken hinge once I opened the box. You are paying for S&H here.

Chest freezers use a small fraction of the energy as others since all the cold air doesnt "fall out" when u open it!! get a freezer glove if you need to dig around! it's worth.

Completely agree. Have had a chest freezer for a while and I hate it.
Would definitely suggest spending more on an upright.

Unless you enjoy freezing your hands while digging to the bottom of a chest freezer just to find out you don't have what you're looking for while also discovering something you forgot was in there...lol
To be fair, that can largely be solved by keeping an inventory of what's in there handy. I have two chest freezers (we buy a few whole animals a year) and we keep a sheet of what's in there taped to the top along with a

While a younger more energetic person like me doesn't mind digging a couple minutes to see what's lurking underneath, or organizing and cleaning out 2-3 times a year, every single person over the age of 40+ that I've seen with these things look like a complete mess. Loose bags of frozen foods spilling everywhere(especially flash-frozen fruits), everything has freezer burn, things 4 - 8 years old, meat that was never vacuum sealed. Mainly lots and lots of processed freezer food from the store, better suited for a normal freezer.

These things are great if people are willing to maintain common sense with basic life organization skills. Which sadly isn't many people. Most people don't even clean their fridge. You could literally just half-ass it and at least divide things into thick grocery bags; veggies in one bag, fruit another, sausage/ground beef in another, etc. Barely any digging required, just lift out the correctly labeled grocery bag... And use it for things actually worth keeping in bulk, like meat. Not bread or fish sticks. Keep an inventory list taped to it, add and cross out things as needed.

If someone isn't prepared to do 5 minutes of maintenance organizing every 3 months or so, or remember what food they have bought and stored, then this isn't for them. For anyone else that has an ounce of spunk and life behind their eyes, these things are great.

Looks too shallow. And can you control temp to prevent freeze ups?

The odds of a chest freezer needing anything in its first 5 years of life are minimal, assuming it is working fine on day 1.

You are 100% correct. We got our chest a few months back and I'm kicking myself for not going with the upright one. On another note, we have been looking at some cleaver ways to organizer this thing to make it easier. Overall I think having one is better than nothing.

You just add a controller to it to maintain a higher temp and they work fine. If the chest freezer is too shallow you build a wood (plus insulation) extension and attach the lid to that. There are plenty of posts online from people doing that.

The Danby doesn't appear to be Energy Star rated - for those that care.
Hit Ctrl+F on the product description page and then type "Energy Star". It will jump right to the spot where it says it's Energy Star rated.

Anyone who bought the model from the store know if it would fit in a standard SUV? The dimensions of these aren't too large but the box could be.
