Regardless of the reviews, last summer I was in desperate need and ordered one from Amazon. Sure enough, as I helped the UPS driver yank it off the truck, I could tell it traveled over a rough road. Root cause: the packaging offers adequate protection for transporting a bag of socks but certainly not a large consumer appliance… just thin cardboard and maybe inch of foam on the base and the top corners. No padding. I kid you not. Ten-dollar toasters ship in a better packaging.
Amazon issued a full refund and neither wanted to replace it nor have me return it.
Banged up it is, yet by luck, its air tight and works well. It sits in the basement and serves a purpose, so the cosmetics are a non-issue for me.
Based on the posts I've read from several e-tailer sites, I believe they arrived from China unscathed as they are transported in mass quantities on a pallet. When the pallet arrives at your local Costco all is good. Its only problematic when shipping an individual unit. I don't fault the final delivery. The logistics are broken.

Would definitely suggest spending more on an upright.
Unless you enjoy freezing your hands while digging to the bottom of a chest freezer just to find out you don't have what you're looking for while also discovering something you forgot was in there...lol
These things are great if people are willing to maintain common sense with basic life organization skills. Which sadly isn't many people. Most people don't even clean their fridge. You could literally just half-ass it and at least divide things into thick grocery bags; veggies in one bag, fruit another, sausage/ground beef in another, etc. Barely any digging required, just lift out the correctly labeled grocery bag... And use it for things actually worth keeping in bulk, like meat. Not bread or fish sticks. Keep an inventory list taped to it, add and cross out things as needed.
If someone isn't prepared to do 5 minutes of maintenance organizing every 3 months or so, or remember what food they have bought and stored, then this isn't for them. For anyone else that has an ounce of spunk and life behind their eyes, these things are great.
