.8 CM MDF is the reality of the situation. I've spent alot of money on similar products through the years and wish I had just assembled some shelves from materials. The plastic shelving units are definitely stronger than these MDF shelved ones over time, although you could cut some plywood and replace these shelves.

Have you seen Plywood prices? It would be too expensive to do.
wire shelving is crazy now...
remember 2 years ago we used to see garage size 18x48x72 units for $50 shipped?
now thanks to usa steel prices doubling and overseas shipping costs also doubling
those days of cheap metal mesh shelving are behind us.
glad i got most of the ones i needed before the price and availability went nuts.
btw, the best way to buy wire shelving units now is from restaurant bankruptcies

I got the recent deal on those (I think they are they same size you are talking about) at costco for $139 ea, I would have loved to get them for $50! Haha
I bought two of the 18"D units recently. I've got a few of the 12"D units that work great for cans and other small pantry items for the small space I've got them in. The deeper units are definitely nice to have for a lot of our bulk stuff, though.
I bought this about 5 years ago with similar price (I bought 2 for $106 + TAX). They are Okay quality, a little bit difficult to put together.
After 5 years light usage (I storage paper towels and tools, no tire/wheel etc.), they are slightly crooked at middle level connection part, I have both of them screwed down to the wall to have this fixed.
Seriously. Plywood and lumber to build shelves is obscene compared to these shelves or similar plastic ones.
About two months ago I built a similar sized 2x4 & plywood shelf setup, but only about 8' W and it cost me nearly $180 and 3 hours build time. The only benefit comparatively was the absolutely great time I had with my 3 year old "helping" me build it.
Crappy MDF included this is still a great value IMO.

I had purchased 3x of the 2, I'm very happy with them. I might get more.
