I had the aluminum on my first round of this product, which I scratched once and replaced and then shattered another.
I currently have a S4 in SS and I recommend the extra money here. It is much more durable, and I have yet to scratch it. I seem to always bump it on things, walking upstairs, etc. I'm not sold on the replacement cost for me on what adds an always on display.
This is a great deal, and worth the upgrade if you are rocking S3 or older and looking to replace. Do the stainless. It's worth the cash.
Can I give the watch to my kid as a $10+fees add on to my cellular phone and not give my kid a cell phone? My kid can just call and text me with it? Or is it married to my cell phone somehow? Thanks for any help.

Apple just allowed this feature recently with watchOS 7 - it's called Family Setup.

Your kid can text him/herself and it will go to your to the watch & iPhone. Do the same in reverse to reply. That thread would show up on both devices so the answer is yes. The downside is the watch will also receive texts meant for your eyes and your phone will receive texts sent to your kid. Far from ideal.
I doubt your kid can call your cell from the watch and visa versa using the cellular number. You may be able to get a 3rd party app that gives the watch or phone a second number. FaceTime could possibly work if the watch calls an email address linked to the iPhone. I'm just guessing. Maybe someone could try it for you to see if FaceTime can be used in both directions.

As the previous poster explained, The latest watchOS can be configured for someone that does not have an iPhone.
Nobody actually likes these things. A fashion statement at best
Not at all. It is extremely useful for my fitness regimen and super convenient for Apple Pay especially since I don't have to pull down my mask to Authenticate with phone.
Good point.
But I would rather buy the kid an SE phone than an Apple Watch.
It actually might be cheaper.
Agreed! The watch is much more limited than an actual phone, and in some cases, the phone would be cheaper. I guess the previous poster doesn't want to have the child exposed to all the fun (and not so fun) things that a cell phone could bring.

Same version of series 6 is typically about $150 more on Walmart's website.
That 2x brighter always on display is a big diff. Maybe not a $200 difference, but series 7 is 5-6 months away.
If I didn't have the Black SS 4 series, I would be all over it.

Now tell me. What does this deal has that the new one (Series 6 or SE) do not have, beside price?

This allows for one iPhone to be tied to multiple watches, and each watch will get its own phone number.
