I would definitely recommend the graphic novel over this version

I've been reading a lot of Asimov and the "new adult and college fantasy" category seems like it might not be my thing.

Gaiman wrote The Watchmen, co-wrote Good Omens, and wrote an awesome historical look at The Hitch Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy, American Gods, and a bunch of other books that I have never read. He's an excellent writer, but nothing like Asimov, much more fantasy than sci fi.

Neil Gaiman is an excellent author, and this is a good story, a fun take on fables and fairy tales

He did NOT write "The Watchmen", but he is an excellent fantasy writer though. There is a graphic novel version that includes all the original text, with illustrations drawn by Charles Vess (pretty famous comic book artist).

He did not write the Watchmen. He did write The Sandman, widely acclaimed, which is in production at Netflix now.
Gaiman is an unique, accomplished talent. He's written many notable things & worth trying out to see if his style suits you.
He most definitely did NOT write Watchmen, though he did provide Alan Moore valuable support & contribution. (https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/how...h-watchmen)
