Thanks OP - Newegg @ $255 and no tax vs the previous Amazon low of $249 + tax makes this lowest-ever for me...

The external hard drives are way cheaper than the internal hard drives. Why doesn't it work the same way with the solid state drives?

SSDs ... paying for speed. I wish they were cheaper too. Hopefully SSDs will be the standard, which will drive the cost down. Don't buy unless you need the tech. Tech gets better every few months. Before you know it, the next best thing is already out. I expect 2TB SSDs to drop half in price by next year.

These good with the PS5? Even after they eventually let PS5 game storage on them as opposed to just the PS4 games?

I've been using it (1 tb version unfortunately) with front USB c port on my Ps5 for a few months and it has been great.
Edit: the external storage will always just be for ps4 games.

ext HDDs only require a cheap SATA converter and offer a shorter warranty, for these a faster controller is needed to reach >550MB/s and warranty is basically the same

It's more like price gouging. The supply is manipulated to create artificial shortage.
