Me too—it's amazing the difference in the price of the Nest Hub Max and the Nest Hub. I could buy three Nest Hubs for the price of a Max...
Well...yea it's kind of for a reason. Screen is 3 inches smaller, and the sound is much, much better on the Hub Max. The Hub to Hub Max is like comparing the Nest Mini to the Nest Audio or JBL.
Yeah, but 3x the price? Maybe I need to go to a store to see both and determine whether the difference is that big in usage. I highly doubt the extra cost in parts demands that much of a premium.
Another reason the Hub Max is more than the Hub is that the Max has a *camera*. It's like having a Nest Indoor Cam built into your Hub... with a larger screen, better sound, etc. etc. much better for Zoom/Duo calls, too.
The only reason the Max is that much money is because it's simply one of the best voice controlled webcam equipped calling devices for elderly connecting to their children. Combine that with covid and everyone doing long distance contact it's easy to see why it demands a premium (this is a priceless thing to some families).. It works very well and is easy to associate with any phone number. I wasn't totally sold on "voice only control" by any device until I lived with the nest I got from Walmart for 49 which I was primarily buying to be a desk clock. When I knew you could cast any YouTube video to it as well I was sold instantly. It's basically a tiny chrome cast as well. I will end this by saying that the Google AI voice assistant is scary good, perhaps better than any assistant I have ever used and I NEVER use siri but only ever had iPhones.

It was only 54% more upon release. The Max has maintained its value due to its video chat feature alone. If not for that in combination with covid, we'd likely be seeing them on clearance under $100 already.
Good price if you want both but the Home Max is already discontinued and there are already rumors of a new Nest Hub on the way.
They've said they'll continue to support the Home Max going forward, even though it is discontinued. I have faith they will.
Their current suggested replacement, The Nest Audio, basically looks like a smaller version of the Home Max's but at $99 per speaker, it makes more sense for people to buy two of them for stereo pairing. The sound is excellent but the trade off is that you can't connect an external source to the pair via wire like you can with the Max.
