Great option for a cheap location tracking SIM. I often have to park my car in unsafe & high crime locations. My car has been towed twice (illegally!) while it was legally parked on city streets (shady tow company!), and several car thefts are reported in these areas every month. I have an old iPhone SE that I hook to a USB battery pack and put both in the trunk under the spare tire cover. I can open Find my IPhone on my main phone and see that my car is still where I left it, or where it has gone if stolen or towed. Runs about 10 days on the external battery pack, and uses minimal data. This type of SIM is perfect.
I have this plan. Here are the add-on costs:

$10.00 - 1000 Minutes Top Up
$2.00 - 100 Minutes Top Up
$5.00 - 250 Minutes Top Up
$10.00 - International Add On Credits

$5.00 - 250 Messages Top Up
$2.00 - 100 Messages Top Up

$10.00 - 1 GB Data Top Up
$15.00 - 2 GB Data Top Up
$2.00 - 100 MB Data Top Up
$5.00 - 250 MB Data Top Up
Any phone is an emergency phone, they all dial 911.

Why would I pay for this when freedom pop is free and tmo offering free line for existing customer?! I only bite if they bundle with device discounts.

Good option if you have an old Sprint CDMA phone to bring back to life for the heck of it. Last year you can.
What is happening in a year to change this?

Freedompop free plan is a joke. They will automatically charge you if you cross the plan limits.

My phone had a bad signal with Sprint, and even worse with T-mobile in my office building.
Does Red Pocket use T-mobile or Sprint tower? If yes, I don't need to consider it.
This eBay deal is only for Sprint & T-Mobile, as mentioned in the OP. If you actually go to the eBay listing, you will see your choices there also are Sprint and T-Mobile.

You get 10 minutes of calling and 10 texts and 25 mb data with Freedom Pop, lol. It's not even worth the time to sign up and the $5 sim card.

The Red Pocket plan can actually be many peoples main cell phone plan, especially older people and people who don't live on their smartphones. I've been with Red Pocket for years. I'm on the $10.00 a month plan, I'm on WIFI calling 90% the time so 1000 minutes a month is way more than enough for me. I've never come close to using the 1 GB of data a month as I'm on WIFI 90% of the time (isn't everyone?). And of course unlimited text. If this $30 plan gave you another couple hundred of MB's a month I'd be set for the year. I usually only use around 200 MB-300 MB of data a month, but only having 200 mb is cutting it too close. But to think I used to pay over $160 a month back in the day for my Verizon plan, lol. Then when I signed my family up for our first "Family Plan" I think I paid almost $300 a month for 3 lines, lol.

It's already being shut down, dismantled so that the spectrum can be reallocated. So, some areas are probably experiencing coverage issues that worked fine before. These phone companies have delayed pulling the plug completely on those old networks, so who knows.

I'm using Tello using their Sprint MVNO service. They've been converting over their Sprint MVNO customers to the T-Mobile network, sending out GSM SIMS for compatible phones. They didn't give a hard set date when they are pulling the plug for their Sprint customers, but they said that they would support Sprint service through at least June and would give notice in advance. My phone was an old Sprint only phone, so I just bought a GSM unlocked phone and ordered my free GSM SIM from Tello just days ago to get off the Sprint network now rather than waiting to be forced off. So, I'll see how the T-Mobile performance is soon. I also have prepaid Verizon on a different phone.
I was on tello with the sprint samsung A50 that I got from a SD deal a couple months ago. Tello was claiming that my A50 won't work on the new t-mobile network and so after going back and forth with tello customer service I just decided to switch to redpocket and hope the old sprint network isn't totally shut down for a couple of years

I bought it last year and while cheap had nothing but issues with red pocket. Every month my phone would stop working and I would have to call their support. Their support number was in the UK and I had to pay a penny a min to get them to correct the issue. Then normally a 60 min call. I ended up porting the number out on the 3rd month of my 360 day plan. Maybe your experience will be different.

You're talking "emergency" too literal. You're not going to call 911 if your car breaks down in the boonies and the battery just died in regular phone,.. or say if you run out of Oreo's and need to call the wife while she's at the store because you left your other phone in the car. Big Grin
If your regular phone dies plug it into the car and charge it. A broken down car still has a working battery. Or buy a backup battery which is way cheaper than paying $30 per year. If you left your phone in the car go to the car and get it. It's not worth $30 per year to call about Oreos.

I'm getting unnecessary spam messages on the new red pocket number. Anyone experiencing that?

Just FYI, Red Pocket can be screwy with their system and you end up getting set up as a monthly plan instead of annual. I tried to have it 'fixed' by customer service last month, but again this month I'm getting warning texts that my plan is ending and I need to refill... despite only being at the end of month two of twelve.
Are you on GSMA? I'm on their cdmav and never had this issue in 3 years, but my spouse on GSMA had this problem this month.
