Ironwolf drives are considered one of the best consumer-grade NAS drives due to its performance, capacity, and reliability. performance differences among HDDs may or may not be noticeable, depending on the scenario. for example, if you use a low-end NAS unit that focuses on power saving, you'll be "bottlenecked" by the unit, not the drives. but for professional uses where you are transferring tons of data, every bit of performance helps. you also can't put a price on reliability (and therefore peace of mind).

if you search for ironwolf drives, you'll see that they cost more than most external hard drives, which usually come with cheaper drives. that's why if these contained ironwolf drives, they would be a bargain.

It's 5 buks more, that previous Newegg deal, but still very reasonable.

If the drive made in the second half of 2020 - should contain Seagate IronWolf ST10000VN0008 inside, but if the date is 01/21 - it's more likely that there are barracuda pro ST10000DM0004

just google it, according many reviews, since september 20 drives with 10tb capacity has ironwolf inside, 8tb has a barracuda

Shoul be Seagate IronWolf ST10000VN0008 inside and 17$ per TB, for those, who can't divide
How do you know that it's he IronWolf inside? A review on Amazon site for the 8TB version said that it is the Baracuda?
"...internal HD model: ST8000DM004-2CX188

if you're a costco member, much better to pay a little more and get the 5gb Portable one, no power needed.
The desktop drive is probably faster and more robust.

Why would the 5GB cost more btw?

I can confirm that they are iron wolfs when I bought 2 of them recently and shucked them. This is a steal at this price if you need NAS drives.

That is a crazy good deal if it is indeed ST10000VN0008 inside.
Bought 2.

Can the case be used with any drive? Im assuming yes?

Oh man, if these are ironwolf drives it might be time to upgrade the 4x4TB array in my synology.

Is it basically 99% certain these are the drives inside current shipping units? Any other options that even come close to this combination of price+reliability?

Comments on amazon on-

"Just got 2 from Amazon for $169 and got an IronWolf 10TB NAS st10000ne0008 manufactured 2 days apart in Nov 2020 from The Netherlands!"
"I opened a Seagate Expansion 10TB external today and found a Seagate Ironwolf Pro 10Tb inside!"

Feels like a lucky draw to me but ordered 4. I will confirm in 2 days on what did I get.

Unfortunately you will destroy the little tabs taking it apart that are needed to put it back together.

My general rule of thumb is not to reuse enclosures like this, much as I hate a good PCB going to waste. Had too many instances of clients who had an enclosure fail and the drive being tied to the enclosure, either through encryption or sector emulation, making any recovery attempt short of a clean room essentially impossible.

Seems like everything I'm finding on Reddit or Amazon reviews mentioning the ironwolf pro is a few months old. How recent was your purchase?
