A stepping motor (STM) provides quiet AF operation, helpful when recording video.

The EF-S 24 is 24*1.6 = 38.4mm "equiv", so closer to the 40 than not.
Phones (or at least single cam phones) are typ. closer to a 28mm FOV which is fine for landscapes and perhaps street photography, but distorts faces way, way more - and this is an objective reality.
