Can non-Ecobee HomeKit temp sensors be used instead of these on the Ecobee thermostat?

I have the old model of these (3) with the ecobee 3, and it's awesome on my split-level. Motion sense on the remote sensors is so cool. I walk down to my downstairs to watch TV and it detects my motion and auto adjusts the averaged room temp to include that sensor and the furnace kicks on Smilie

In for 2, one for each bedroom and one for the open living/dining/kitchen area. Leaning towards placement in the kitchen. The hallway with the ecobee proper is off the living room, so the kitchen is farthest away... Plus it gets hot when you're cooking. Anyone have thoughts on placement in the kitchen? Good or bad?

I find that we can't use the motion sensor option as it's just not practical. However, we do have these (8) in all the rooms and have certain rooms "active" during the day/night.

My split level (with just a 2 people) I find to be the perfect use case for the motion sensing. My downstairs is 2-4 deg lower temp so it's nice that it kicks on when we go down there
