Long Read but worth It (trust me)
my current setup = ecobee 3 and 5 sensors setup with 2 extra incase any of the sensors go bad.
setup for me:
1. open all vents in house and install sensors where you think you might need them. start off with a min 3 sensors plus thermostat
2. cool house and check each sensors temp - reading should be + or - 1-2 degrees
3. in our case, thermostat is about 6 degrees or more colder that all other sensors and all other sensors read about 4 degrees off from each other.
4. any sensors that is reading more colder/hotter then current temperatures, adjust vents to restrict air flow to that room and test again.
5. repeat process until temps are close to each other or you get tired of testing and just give up.
6. if current temperatures cannot be close to each other, it's ok as time of day, sunlight, insulation will factor into room temp differences.
7. if on a separate level house (2 floors or more, set even temp per floor)
8. once everything is set up, let system stay the way it is, and test for the next couple of days to make sure temp on each sensor is to your satisfaction.
9. once done, continue to next steps.
setting up cooling comfort settings:
this is where it get's a little interesting as after the fist setup, most will leave it at that and say it's good, but you need to customize it a little more as different events will change our cooling needs.
if you leave this stock and set the temp on the thermostat, it will average all sensors and make the room with the most people hotter while making the other rooms ice cold.
Home, Sleep, Away, is the default settings but you need to add to this.
1. go to your comfort settings and tap on Home
2. set temp for home
3. under sensors, pick sensors that you want to be averaged in this comfort setting
4. save settings
5. add other settings depending on your needs and name them accordingly (kids Gaming, Visitors, Party)
doing it this way, you have full control of what sensors are averaged and not trapped by having the thermostat average all sensors.
yes it might not be a friendly way to do it as you have to change it depending on your needs, but at least you are only cooling the room your in and being comfortable at the same time.
we have this thermostat on google and just tell google to change it to the comfort setting we want
side note :
for the person that was asking about the auto fan on to help cool down the house without having the ac/heater on.
you can click on the setting and tap on the fan icon to turn it from auto to on or:
1. go to settings and then system
2. click on fan and enter a number from 0-60
3. what this setting does is turn on the in home fan, without turning on the ac/heater for x amount of min every hour.
this will have the internal fan cycle on and off every x amount of min every hour, even when your not home to circulate the air and try to prevent stale air inside your house.
hope this helps some, have ecobee and happy setup. it takes some time, but so worth it.

The app tends to glitch on me, showing my sensors on the wrong floor, but refreshing that usually fixes it. I also wish geofencing worked better.
If we used the follow me mode our usage would increase drastically.
Living in a split level upstairs always hot, downstairs always cold. Probably need to adjust the vents better but can never get an even temperature.
1. You can place sensors upstairs in the hallway & bedroom and one downstairs. You can give the priority to the sensors with the bedroom being #1 and downstairs #2 or other way around, and then set the desired temperature on the thermostat. The occupancy sensor built-in these sensors will tell the HVAC to function to maintain the temperature at the sensor detecting occupancy, If multiple sensors detect occupancy, it will try to average it out.
2.Typically in a split level house with just one HVAC unit, I would partially close the vents upstairs in winter (the hot air rises up) and in the winter, partially close the downstairs vents. You should avoid closing the vents completely as it puts too much stress on the blower motor- reducing it's life span.

The problem is my (probably most) HVAC system is a blunt instrument. It can't heat/cool one room and not others. So if it needs to turn on, it turns on for the entire house. It's still useful knowledge to have that information at your fingertips. For example, the baby room is 4F warmer than other places in the house. Though, that's something that usually requires manual intervention on my part.
YMMV. In my situation, my house probably just has general challenges. Which rooms (or don't) face the sun, time of day, inefficient ductwork, windows, which vents are open or closed, etc. There is another setting in ecobee that lets you control how often the fan turns on to push air around to distribute better. IMHO this does a tiny bit to improve the uneven temps in my house.

So if you have one in your bedroom and use it for your sleep schedule, and say you want your sleep schedule to be 72 degrees, it will use that sensor in your room. So even if the main unit is registering 68 degrees, your bedroom will still be 72.
Your ac is still pushing air to all the vents, but is is looking at the temperature sensor for whichever one (or multiple) you assign.

Getting a new house built, and I'll be going back to Ecobee again. Ordered 5 of these 2-packs... could only add up to 4 in one order, but was able to order the 5th 2-pack separately at the discounted price still.

One thing I lost was my full three stages with the modulating furnace, but with DIP switch settings on the furnace board I can still use it as a two stage with Ecobee, either low-high or med-hight. The other nice thing about the Infinity controller was that it could test static pressure in realtime, which was nice to tell if I was using a too-restrictive air filter, or if I had too many registers closed - but once I checked those things, static pressure never really changed so I didn't need to keep testing it.
