What is this Service?:
- Shodan is a search engine for Internet-connected devices. Are you interested in measuring which countries are becoming more connected, which version of Microsoft IIS is the most popular or you want to find the control servers for malware? Maybe a new vulnerability came out and you want to see how many hosts it could affect? Shodan helps answer these questions and more.
- How is it different than other search engines?
- The most fundamental difference is that Shodan crawls the Internet whereas other search engines crawls the World Wide Web. However, the devices powering the World Wide Web only make up a tiny fraction of what's actually connected to the Internet. Shodan's goal is to provide a complete picture of the Internet.

For home use, it's a nice way to see whether that Chinese webcam you got from a different SD last week is phoning home or exposing your feed to the world. And if you want to get fancy and start automating some checks Shodan offers a pretty neat API.
For the price of a latte this is an amazing resource.
You don't think there are smaller businesses that can make legitimate use of this? For many they do nothing and this would be better than zero.

This is a fantastic deal if you work in technology, not just for security. As someone who runs websites, I want to see what Shodan knows about my websites and other public services. Hopefully, only the things we intend to be public will be there, but if not, I'd want to know ASAP to figure out where the failure was caused.

Hackers will have access to these tools anyway. There is no reason to limit access to who has access to Shodan because the overall balance of security increases.
There is a link to a research article in my post above that shows Shodan does not cause an increase in attacks.

As someone who a year ago thought "security just gets in the way of doing my job" but had a pretty rude awakening shortly thereafter (VERY sophisticated ransomware attack) I've acquired a newfound "love" of security. I even got to play CISO for a few months in addition to my day job.
I'm sure this won't come close to what I can do with Qualys but it should be interesting nonetheless. (Interesting enough to merit a $4 outlay anyway.)
Another difference with Google is that Shodan requires you to understand the search query syntax. For example, you can't simply enter power plant into Shodan and expect to get proper results. We designed Shodan for engineers/ developers and to get the most out of the data you need to understand the search query syntax.
