S4 (T4) is based on the original 2016 Mi robot Vacuum (also same CPU) while the S5 (S50) is the premise for everything that came after it. The S6 (T6) is an updated version of the S5/S50 with more sensors, but the basic PCB design and motor layout is the same.
The "S6" isn't part of the same series of robots as the S4 MAX, S6 Pure and S5 MAX which are the newer P5 platform with modifications, but the older S5 and S4 do support multi floor mapping now. S6 obviously had it a lot earlier as it was more of a flagship model at the time.
S5 MAX does not have CPU upgrades, but rather extra features tacked on. In reality its a hybrid of P5 electronics/sensors + the Chinese T7 model mopping features.
S6 Pure (P5) isn't the same or similar as the S6 (T6). People keep spewing out this but they're wrong.. the internal design is way different. Even the chassis sits higher on the P5.
S6 MAX V is a rebranded T7 PRO with worse features such as a slower charger and downgraded floor mat. The regular T7 was never sold outside of china, but we got the S5 MAX which is a "lower end" version. T7 has various upgrades relatively sensor wise and a stronger motor.
I agree the naming scheme is really messed up.
P5 (Entry model):
S6 Pure (Different top plate, otherwise the same robot and features at a higher cost vs Chinese model)
S4 MAX (Removed mopping attachment)
S5 MAX (Has T7 water tank and extra features)
T7:
Never sold outside of China
T7 PRO:
S6 MAX V (Downgraded slow charger, cheaper floor mat)
T7S:
S7 (Downgraded slow charger)
T7S PLUS:
T7S but has camera like T7 Pro, not announced globally.
Chinese models have 3 prong bristle side brush (Better IMO, trade for durability), Global models have 5 prong rubber brush.
The charger difference likely comes down to wear and longevity for battery (they do not sell replacements), though they do sell the S6 with premium faster charger globally.
S6 (Non pure) is close to the Chinese T6. Rubber side brush is only change.

Is the multiple floors feature available for the S5? Last time I checked it was not an available option in the app. What was available is that it would save the last few maps. But if you cleaned the same room a few times the older maps of different rooms would fall out of the history.
The cheaper S4 MAX is legitimately the same robot without the mopping attachment. Its also tuned a little higher for better flow which helps performance on lower settings.
If you need mopping, I'd recommend the S5 MAX variation but this also has no second filter. All 3 are similar electronics, but the S5 MAX has added features taken from the Chinese T7. Its a hybrid of an entry (P5) and higher end model.
Alternatively, the regular S6 (known as T6 in china) is more of a premium build and feature set. Has all the bells and whistles, 2nd filter, no mop zones, bigger 480ml bin, 2 pads, dry pads etc..
The only problem with this model is that its a bit older and likely isn't getting updated like the others.
No seriously, do your own research 😒
My advice is to try neato brand, solid performance at a slick price. You get app, map, boundary restrictions, great navigation and suction.

S4 Max is a newer bot than S5. It doesn't have mopping, but has newer CPU for multi-floor mapping and also seems to give slightly better results for vacuuming based on how its suction is setup.
S4 and S5 are older bots with older CPU. S4 is vacuum only and S5 is vacuum+mopping, though mopping is pretty useless as you mentioned.
S6, S4 Max and S5 Max were next series bots with upgraded CPUs, which support multi floor mapping. S4 Max is vacuum only (S4 series), S6 seems to be marginal upgrade over S5 with the upgraded CPU but rest mostly similar, and S5 Max has the CPU upgrades and slight mopping upgrades (with much bigger water tank, electronic water flow control). Of these, S5 Max cost the most as it should be based on features, and was released after S5 infact.
Then S6 pure and S6 MaxV came. S6 pure is same as S6 with some minor items downgraded to reduce cost and price. S6 MaxV added Camera for object recognition + mopping features of S5 Max + higher suction motor.
Finally, S7 was just announced, with vibrating mop (so as to agitate against the floor and offer better mop cleaning in one pass), raising mop for going over carpet, etc. It doesnt have Camera AI of S6 MaxV and is cheaper than S6 MaxV. It is supposed to have an auto-empty bin attachment coming after summers.
I would recommend checking out the comparison videos b/w Roborock models from "Vacuum Wars" on youtube if you are trying to decide.
S5 Max and S6 MaXV maybe slightly better with larger water task, electronic water release control which you can decide.
S7 maybe the best for mopping, as it has vibrating mop to agitate/rub against the floor and give better results vs the others.
I did get a nice email from roborock repairs apologizing they didn't fix the issue (they didn't even test it) and I provided them with YouTube vids on my actual vacuum, the issue, and how to reproduce the issue.
Their solution in the end was to send it again to them, for another 3 weeks and their technician will pay more attention and take a "closer" look at the issue.
Disappointing for a $500 vacuum.... oh and by the way, as suspected when I sent it out, it was pretty much in new condition and when I got it back all the panels were mucked and scratched up. So it looks like I need to call Law and Order: Robot SVU.
