Yes it is.

This is a good deal.

I would recommend calling around locally if you need a large quantity.

My wife called a farm up the road from us and they charge $20yd for garden soil (not screened) And $30/yd for screened soil (larger items like mulch are sifted out).

I had good luck last year planting grass seed using screened soil.

The miracle grow comes out to $72 / yd vs $30 if I buy locally. I'm so close they waive the delivery, but if you have a pickup it may work for some. (Farm also doesn't charge me tax 🤫)

Again, this is a good deal, but I would call around if you need more that 10 bags or so. I'm sure location matters, Im in NJ and happen to be close to a lot of farm.

I will add the convenience of transporting bags vs having to shovel into a cart and dump should not be ignored. Very easy to toss a bag into the garden bed, cut open and dump.
Got any deals on a time machine?
Sigh. When did I get so old? Scrolling through 5 pages worth of comments to try and figure out if SOIL is a good deal and what I need to rehab my lawn. Is this the type of adulting I've been reduced to? 🤷

Can I use the Whitney Farm soil sold in Costco in a raised garden bed alone? The bag says for mending in ground soil. That is 8 bucks for 50 Qt.
Sorry about unrelated question but couldn't pass up the opportunity of asking people who know better than me.

I would mix it with a little sand/soil. Thats what I do and works well.

bag specifically says not for pots.
this is basically compost, fine mulch, and a little peat moss. it's not actually "soil."

for potting buy a bag of perlite and mix at like 2:1

I tried to start seeds in this soil as I didn't have potting or starter soil. Bad idea. This stuff is so damn dense, and it had fungus gnat larvae in it. I had to abandon those seeds and redo them with coconut coir and/or potting mix.

On the other hand, I've been using this in my garden for years. It feeds very well. We have clay heavy soil, so I dig a hole and throw about a cubic foot of this in the ground. Plants do really well all season with little to no supplemental feedings.

Did you order from local place for a raised bed ?

I'm sure others can advise much better than I can as to proper soil for various purposes... But I used the soil from the farm to plant grass seed last fall. I had a lot of area to cover so it made sense.

We used the miracle grow garden soil to fill the garden beds that we made (just ground contact pressure treated pine- pocket hole screwed to make boxes).

We tilled the soil, leveled it a little, put boxes into position , and put cardboard down. We then put the bags of miracle grow into the garden bed, cut open with utlility knife, and easily poured the dirt out.

Last year was our first attempt at a garden and it seemed to have worked fine.

Garden soil means you use it in-ground because in-ground has better water drainage than a pot which is basically a container trapping the water with just a few holes underneath. Garden soil is too compact which means your roots are going to be drowning in water and not have any oxygen to breathe. If you're going to be buying this for pots, search up on YouTube a guide to making your own potting mix with garden soil. However, from my own experience, unless you have hundreds of pots, you're better off just buying pre-made potting soil because you're not going to be saving much $ after buying the materials to mix it. Companies do it in bulk so the savings aren't as evident for a DIY job. If you use garden soil, don't expect your plant to grow and sprout fruits or flowers. It's not gonna be worth your time so don't bother.

Just my own experience: I bought this recently and it had a lot of wood chips, which is just fluff. If you're looking for something cheap that's good enough, this is a good deal I guess

Organic mix at Costco and Sams club is available throughout the Spring if you want organic dirt for your vegetables.
Upcoming sale at Costco.

BTW, I did use this for my large pots last year. I mixed in the dirt from the petunias, too.
The flowers did okay, but I agree that it is best to use potting soil or a mix of that and this (depending on how big your pots are and the drainage conditions).

They definitely did a switcheroo on pricing as before they sold 2.0cu bags, but those have been discontinued and probably for good reason as they weighed closed to 60lbs a bag, add more when wet. Price wise its still a good deal to plant evergreens. I plan to buy a few for my Green Giant project and use some as topsoil as well, as its cheaper than actual topsoil.
