Why use this instead of the standard joy cons? Does it work wirelessly without docking?

I would assume that it's a million times more comfortable than the joy cons.

interesting design. I have handles that the entire switch, joy cons and all, slides into. You still utilize the joy cons for controls, it's just more comfortable. With the drifting issues of the joy cons, this is a possible alternative? I like handheld mode, but joy con drift makes it a chore. Even after sending in two for repair, I still have issues.

I really want to see Nintendo release some "pro joy cons", I don't care if they only work in handheld either.

No it only works with the switch tablet connected via the usb c input. Joycons are not very good for fps. The appeal of these 3rd party controllers is it's more comfortable on the hands over time compared to the joycons. For me it's a couple hrs before my hands start to cramp.

Sounds to me like it does not need to be plugged in to work but that the cable charges the Switch while you play but I'm not sure.

You would be correct. It is a pass through connection to allow it to charge and communicate with the switch.

This product is interesting for those looking to preserve their joycons from drift, but the reviews on this product do not look good. A lot of reviews say the joystick breaks after just a few months.

One review on Amazon showed the left stick no longer functional after 5 months of use.

So lasts about 5 times longer than a standard joycon?

Because it's easier to carry for portability and this way you don't put excess wear on the joy con controllers.

I have the Satisfye grip and it's the best Switch grip I've used so far. I've tried the Hori Switch Pad Pro also and while the joysticks were better, the comfort wasn't as good ergonomically. Haven't used this specific one but other reviews also praise the Satisfye grip as the most comfortable as well. Just my two cents if you're looking for a grip for extended comfort. Got the one that came with a travel case and thumbstick covers which was a pretty good price.
