PSA: For those in states where you're considering enrolling in the utility program to save money on the thermostat, make sure you carefully read the terms and conditions on those programs. For my state and local utility (and I assume other states and utility companies) the pricing model changes, in some cases drastically, by introducing different levels of peak pricing and sometimes even direct control over your thermostat. Whether it can save you money in the long-term is possible, but just be sure you fully understand what the program entails before jumping in with both feet.

      Great post OP!

For NJ people, NJNG limits thermostat discounts to 2 per account for the lifetime of NJNG marketplace. For instance, I've previously purchased 2 discounted nest thermostats (prior gen) and the NJNG marketplace prevents me from purchasing

Just talked to chat about what's going on and here was their answer, "In order to receive the instant rebate, you need to have electric heat with dominion energy". This is for VA. I don't have electric heat (thank god) so not eligible I guess.
      In the same boat.

Seems like SoCal Edison doesn't have this. Bummer
They don't have a cash back offer, but they do offer a $75 bill credit if you join their Smart Energy program.

Tennessee still hasn't got with the new era. I've been seeing these types of similar posts and a lot of states have implemented these types of programs over the last 3 to 4 years. Once a quarter I'll check my utility company's webpage to see if they have adopted a similar program as other utilities in close by states have and it's always the same song and dance. However, I do applaud my utility company for finally adapting a fiber internet program, but my neighborhood will be one of the last they get to with an estimated time frame of 4 years. I can drive 10 mins down the road to another neighborhood that was lucky and got in phase 1 or 2 of the rollout. I'm in phase 6 and I believe the utility company is either in phase 2 or 3 currently. The only option in my neck of the woods is charter/spectrum and I can only get 100Mb (which is fine for now but as fast as new network gizmos are coming out and eating up bandwidth, that 100Mb will be hurting in a couple of years). Sorry for the rant and that's all I'm going to say as I don't want my blood pressure to skyrocket today 😉.

Here's the fine print for the Dominion deals (Virginia)

Notice that it is only for Virginia (Dominion also services Northeast NC).

Thanks OP! Didn't go with nest (although my provider offered it for $35). Went with ecobee instead. Still managed to snag it for $85. Pretty good deal.

      How is this a "hack"?

Energy companies run these deals, day in and day out. No hack required or part of it.
