PSA: For those in states where you're considering enrolling in the utility program to save money on the thermostat, make sure you carefully read the terms and conditions on those programs. For my state and local utility (and I assume other states and utility companies) the pricing model changes, in some cases drastically, by introducing different levels of peak pricing and sometimes even direct control over your thermostat. Whether it can save you money in the long-term is possible, but just be sure you fully understand what the program entails before jumping in with both feet.

California pg&e is NOT no strings attached. For one, you need to install and activate it to get the rebate, so if you already have a smart thermostat you can't get this to resell
I'm not sure how they find out if you installed or not! Can't you just buy it and if there is some kind of activation, activate it and maybe install the new one, get the rebate and sell either the new thermostat or the old one? You'll still be able to sell it as a `Like New` product if you really want to go that route! Or, am I missing something?

They don't have a cash back offer, but they do offer a $75 bill credit if you join their Smart Energy program.
"smart energy program", may mean they can turn off your air conditioner at the hottest of times to save their infrastructure.

You can sell your old one!

I received a smart thermostat rebate from PG&E a couple years ago, so not sure if I would qualify for this or not. Don't want to risk $100.

Yes, I'm surprised more ppl aren't more wary of this. There are many stories of ppl having their heat/AC throttled during peak times by the energy company.

For example, this is from the T&C of PSE&G in NJ:
      INSPECTIONS
PSE&G reserves the right to inspect all rebated products to verify compliance with PSE&G Marketplace Program terms and conditions. This may include post-installation inspections or participant interviews. Upon reasonable notice by PSE&G, the Customer must allow access to the installed product for a period of four (4) years after receipt of the rebate from PSE&G.

PSE&G may participate in the PJM Capacity Market through the demand reductions achieved by the products installed as part of this Program. Customer acknowledges and agrees that, for purposes of participating in the PJM Capacity Market, PSE&G shall own the rights to all such demand reductions without cost or obligation to Customer. PSE&G's ownership of the Project's demand reductions does not affect Customer's ownership of the products nor the energy savings derived from the products.

So unfortunate that Ohio forced our providers to discontinue their energy savings programs.

Ohio duke energy doesn't work. They discontinued that in September, but thanks op for the list the energy federation one seems to work

edit: the energy federation one requires you to have an account with one of their energy providers so it didn't work for me, nor will it work if you are in any of the big cities of Ohio
Beat me to it in saying Duke energy discontinued it in Ohio.

Op, thank you for compiling this!

All, I have an android, if that matters. Nest vs ecobee?
Nest can be an easier install if you dont have a common wire already run to your thermostat.
