Spotify's Car Thing, a gadget that lets users access the company's streaming music offering in a driver-friendly format, is finally a product regular Spotify Premium subscribers have a chance of getting their hands on. As part of the device's formal launch, subscribers can sign up to get one, and, remarkably, Spotify is discounting the entire $80 price, asking that eligible customers only pay the $7 shipping charge.

What exactly is Car Thing? It's a device that Spotify has been working on for a few years, using early prototypes to understand how its customers interact with Spotify's streaming audio content while in their cars. The version that the company has just released looks like a smartphone with a large rotating knob attached to the front of the display.

Spotify's introductory offer of an essentially free Car Thing is no doubt going to create huge demand, especially among Spotify subscribers who don't own cars with a CarPlay– or Android Auto-compatible system. It will be more interesting to see what happens after this offer is over and the device starts selling for its regular $80 price.

AT&T Thanks via ATT is offering Free Spotify Premium 6 months for free valid w/ Eligible AT&T Services/Customers only. Note, offer is not available if you've previously tried Spotify Premium.

This looks like a bad idea to me. Single-purpose, throwaway devices that have questionable longevity are not the kind of product I expect in 2021.
I think it is actually awesome for those who use Spotify Premium daily and are in the category of people who don't have smart radios/new cars. The regular phone app isn't that good for commuting and this looks much easier to navigate/fuss-free.

I'd use this in a heartbeat. I wouldn't pay full price but if I get it for free I'd gladly pay the $7 to ship it to me.
So it connects via aux or BT to your car stereo, something your phone can already do, but it still has to connect through your phone in order to get songs.

All you really get is a quick and easy interface to access said songs all while most vehicle manufacturers are moving towards better infotainment setups with apple carplay and android auto where Spotify is already supported.

So this fills the niche of the older infotainment cars or those who want to pick and see their songs on the fly...that's a very small niche IMO.

I love this idea. If the device has a memory of the last item I played on the device then it's worth $80. I listen differently on my phone/at home then I do in the car. I listen to more podcasts in the car, if this can pick up where I left off from on the device then I don't have to fiddle with it before driving.

Yes it's stupid / useless product for people who own something with CarPlay but it is useful for non CarPlay.

I wouldn't hold my breath, considering every device on which I've ever played Spotify only remembers the last thing I played on Spotify, and not the device itself. But hey, they say pigs have flown before! 🤷 ♀️

I'm guessing this is a way for them to test the waters to see if there would be demand for such a thing. It's the typical use for waiting lists in validation testing.

I always try very hard to name my apps with smart sounding names. I will follow Spotify naming convention and call my apps Car Thing, Tablet Thing, Computer Thing 1 and Thing 2.

Great idea for classic cars that want to add Spotify.
Might be nice in my side by side too.
