This looks like a bad idea to me. Single-purpose, throwaway devices that have questionable longevity are not the kind of product I expect in 2021.
I think it is actually awesome for those who use Spotify Premium daily and are in the category of people who don't have smart radios/new cars. The regular phone app isn't that good for commuting and this looks much easier to navigate/fuss-free.

I'd use this in a heartbeat. I wouldn't pay full price but if I get it for free I'd gladly pay the $7 to ship it to me.
So it connects via aux or BT to your car stereo, something your phone can already do, but it still has to connect through your phone in order to get songs.

All you really get is a quick and easy interface to access said songs all while most vehicle manufacturers are moving towards better infotainment setups with apple carplay and android auto where Spotify is already supported.

So this fills the niche of the older infotainment cars or those who want to pick and see their songs on the fly...that's a very small niche IMO.

Am I the only one that doesn't get why this even exists?

I get that it would be useful for people without android auto receivers in their car but you can just install the android auto app and use it on your phone via bluetooth?

This is just a nicer UI version of their android auto app with a dial?
Why do people still use siriusxm radio devices? Their more useful and intuitive than the OEM solution, that's always been the reason. The OEMs either use too old Bluetooth or have a bad, slow touch interface\GUI If the lame car makers would not have made it almost impossible to put an after market radio in current cars, people who love music would have an aftermarket radio with better wattage in their cars.

Most of you will be disappointed:

1. Users on a free or discounted trial of Premium Individual, Premium Family, Premium Duo or Premium Student are not eligible for this Car Thing Offer

2. You must have received an email directly from Spotify stating that you are eligible to receive a Car Thing. Offers are non-transferrable.

3. You must have a valid and current payment method. Spotify gift cards and non-recurring payment methods cannot be used to participate in this Car Thing Offer

4. You must pay for your Spotify Premium subscription directly to Spotify and not through a third party (e.g., not through a cable or telecommunications provider).
To clarify your first point. Premium family (primary member), premium student, premium duo (primary member) are eligible. Anyone on a trial of the above is not.

You missed the point. CarPlay does lots of things. This only lets you do ONE thing. A better device would be something like this, but that gives all the features of CarPlay.
If they let you add Waze etc ( they said they might) then its pretty awesome for those not having carplay

What other items have Spotify given its users? I've been with them for years, and I've never received not one item.
They've given a Google Home Mini device for free a few times before and also they've had for a while the bundle to include ad-version of Hulu with your subscription for free (that might still be a thing but not sure).

Those are two I can think of but they're not just given to you, you'd have to see they were offering the deal and redeem the stuff like this one.

I signed up at 2:54 PM yesterday and immediately received the e-mail stating "Thanks for your interest in Car Thing. You're on the list, and if it becomes available, we'll let you know."

I haven't gotten anything else since.

OK I have not seen anyone else say that. Everyone seems to want to debate why this thing exists. Who cares, if you do not need it then forget about it. Me I could use it.

Your car will probably be broken into if a thief saw this on your dashboard.

$6.99 is a good deal for a dashboard phone holder with a charging cable provided.

if Shipping and Handling are over $10, I will skip it.

This exists almost specifically for me - I have a massive Spotify footprint and a 1966 Mustang with no radio at the moment. This is a perfect size for the little slot where the original barely-FM radio would have lived. Instead I can keep the original radio safely stored in a box and build my setup off of this.
You still need it to connect it your phone and your phone either gets plugged into the radio via aux or paired over Bluetooth. You would need to install like an amp or something to get the signal to speaks or a Bluetooth kit for that car. Also nice taste in cars my grandfather used to own a 65 fastback. If you want I factory looking radio with modern features it expensive but look at slide bar radios.

I don't have an issue using Spotify on my phone. Its not in the way and I can listen to my music........so why would I want a dedicated device to listen to Spotify, that requires another power connection, BT or aux connection, and internet connection on my phone?
What a waste.
