Someone who would want the unlimited original quality Photos storage benefit offered by Google until Jan 31st 2022 [google.com], and high quality indefinitely (no announced end date) afterword.

Google Photos announced they would start counting photos uploads against storage after June 1st, 2021 [google.com]. I take a LOT of photos/video and upload a lot onto the platform, even in high quality it is over 4TB uploaded. The storage benefit on Pixel phones are by device, not by account. Also you don't have to actually take the photos on the phone to upload them, just have them on the device. No problem for me especially since I'm loading upwards of 30GB at a time.

I don't mind the people saying "but it's the cloud", and I do have other backups, but the stellar object recognition, mapping of photos, and power of the service they offer can't be beat in my opinion.

Just because the phone loses updates does not mean it stops functioning. Most phones from other manufacturers rarely get updates after the first year, and some never do.

Heads up: long time google pixel user, and the 3 XL I have has been questionable.
The last 2 replacements, from google, charged only on pixel wireless stands, have had the battery inflate and push the back off the phone. This is one step from exploding/ chemical fire.

I would NOT trust pixel 3's at this point.
Good that Udon't trust. Now find thread that u trust .

Not bad if you need a phone... I would personally probably keep waiting longer, and upgrade for at least the 4a5g, if it went below $150 in the future.

I know some people really like Pixel phones for some custom ROM(?) that is very security focused.

Probably not a common issue, but a friend has the pixel 3, and the charger port just doesn't work anymore. But I think he has wireless charging, so he can at least still charge it that way
I have a Pixel 3 and the charging port doesn't work anymore...the camera also doesn't work. I wouldn't recommend this phone at all.

On the bootlocker locked note, I just got the new one from woot yesterday, oddly enough I activated developer mode and there's an option there 'unlock bootloader' . I wasn't planning on doing anything about it, but is that easy?

Agreed. Had pixel since gen 1 and the photo management keeps me coming back. I used to game on my phones when I was younger. As I got older and started using pixels, I learned my main use cases are just internet, YouTube/tiktok, voice/video calls, music, and camera. That entire list can be done just fine on almost any phone. So the differentiator for me is the easy of camera and media management. Pixel's system can't be beat. Never run out of space and phone auto syncs to the cloud to keep space available on my 64gb model. This phone is so easy to use and is a form factor I am having a hard time replacing.

You're also spot on with the face recognition and ability easily sort. I have an album for my daughter and a google hub I have my parents for Christmas. It's linked to the frame and they get access to thousands of photos. It also does a really good job of showing the newly added ones mixed in with historical. This is nice to keep my parents see how she grows up when they can't be here all the time.

There's always GrapheneOS.
Sadly, you wont be able to install it on this phone. This particular version is VZ, so bootloader is locked.

Can you get a usb-c to usb and plug in an external HDD and let it upload from there?
