I have tried death wish preground, it wasn't terrible, but was far from one of my favorites.
Death wish is marketed basically for caffeine content. The arabica (classic) bean has much better flavor but the robusta (tends to be a little more harsh and bitter, but generally simpler flavor compounds) contains about 25% more caffeine by weight. I am guessing they go with robusta "not my cup of coffee"
I enjoy the complexity that arabica can deliver. To each their own.

This is literally the worst coffee I've ever had. My girlfriend gave it to me because of the name/marketing. It tastes terrible and isn't any more caffeinated than anything else.

Hard pass. Do not recommend. 0/10.

Dark coffee has less caffeine and also generally should be cheaper because the roast itself overpowers the subtle qualities of coffee that make expensive coffee expensive.

This type of crap is just pure hype. Go get some lavazza super crema for six bucks a lb

So true. This sort of coffee is pure marketing, especially to insecure dude bros who need to find a way to make their coffee brand seem more macho.

Neighbor gave me this and I tried it in my espresso machine. Do not recommend.
Any store bought ground coffee is going to taste horrible in an espresso machine. Pre-ground coffee isn't ground fine enough for espresso because the vast majority of people buying it use it for drip coffee.

This is the first comment that really provides any real insight. You're correct in assuming they use robusta beans. That is the main contributor to both the high caffeine content as well as the lack of complex flavor you would get in any other bag for a similar price.

Death Wish coffee is absolutely overpriced and it's popular only because of their marketing, but their coffee is incredibly strong in terms of caffeine content. The flavor isn't nearly as bad as a lot of these comments make it seem, but for the price it's pretty dismal compared to similarly priced coffee.

The average coffee drinker who buys Folgers and puts their drip coffee machine on "Bold" probably would think it tastes pretty good. But then again, the average Folgers drinker wouldn't pay $12-20 per pound of coffee.

I need to branch out and try something else other than Lavazza's whole bean, but the comments is epic.

It was whole bean. I ground it myself. It's not the exact same but it shouldn't be TOO far off the same path

I think that they actually just use Robusta beans instead of Arabica... Robusta has more caffeine and tastes shittier... But I know someone who drinks it because it has more "kick"... I'd rather just enjoy a 2nd cup of actual good coffee... but to each their own I suppose...
