Comparing the 3700X to Intel's i7-9700K shows that, when overclocked, the 3700X is 26% faster at 64-core computations but 13% slower for gaming and desktop (sub eight core performance).
...
The heavily hyped 3700X, paired with a 2060S, offers real world gaming performance comparable to the $80 USD entry level 4-core, 4-thread Intel Core i3-9100F. At $320 USD, the 3700X offers reasonable value to full time media encoders but general desktop users, gamers and even streamers should look elsewhere.
Userbenchmark is horrible for general reference. To further explain on what that quote is implying.....the same can be said for any processor. So yep that 10900k is comparable to an i3 when paired with a 2060s as....wait for it....you are gpu bound! What a revelation!
Looks like a good deal to me. Don't forget the Intel processors burn electrons at a higher rate, and electrons aren't free.$400 for a 550 mobo and a 3700x? That is a win. Anyone who is on an older Intel platform can move their graphics over and give AMD a try - for reasonable money. I have a 3700x with a 3070 - (bought the system that way to get the 3070) and it is actually better than I expected. I also have a 10700K with a 3090 - There isn't much of a difference in most game play. I have not tried the 3070 in the 10700k. The 3070 does everything I need, and more importantly it does everything my kids need. The 3900 or 3950x would be my go to for zen 2 (I have a 3900x as well - awesome for work) unless you go threadripper. Ill take a 3900x or 3950x for the cores over any other sub $1 grand processor IF you do work with cad or photoshop etc... Don't even bring up the 5900x - You can't get them. 5950x Haven't seen either in the wild. As to the comment about bottlenecking a 2060... 3700x worked well with 3070, and as it is on an AM4 board, you can swap out the 3700 any time you manage to get a 5700, 5800, 5900... Intel? New Mobo...every generation it seems. Frankly, both Intel and AMD offer excellent product lines for not a lot of money - Look back a decade and stop to think. What are you getting for your dollar compared to 10, 20 , 30 years ago? Modern home PC's are a marvel and we take them for granted.
this chip shortage has distorted the price by quite a bit.
still running the AMD 2700 chip that was on sale for 135 dollar (with 3 month game pass), and MSI B450M for 80 dollar that i bought a year ago.
No doubt the 3700X will be faster, but not a 100% faster.
it is such a bad time for DIY builders.

I still think that combo (bought one myself) is one of the best bang for the buck deals I've seen in years.

Agree.
I am also trying to build a house. 2020 isn't looking so bad.
