IronWolf and IronWolf Pros are possible. It seems that most of them in the last FP deal were Exos x16 ST14000NM001G drives. That does not guarantee these will be the same.

I've been reading about superior storage tech coming down the pipe like the 580TB tape prototype from IBM/Fujifilm and SSD is slowly coming down in price, but optical drives becoming truly obsolete is only going to happen when a better storage medium has replaced it, no?
Sure more and more is moving to the cloud but there will always be demand for enterprise level on site storage, and even cloud storage requires massive server farms with actual physical storage SOMEWHERE so production and demand is still guaranteed even if the average consumer is just supporting that demand by buying the cloud storage.
What am I missing?

Seems like no real stinkers among recent high capacity HDDs in their latest report, and that includes ST14000NM001G. I would still prefer a 5400rpm drive for home use, but the price is solid.
The 1 year warranty tells me that Seagate is not confident of the longevity or build quality of these externals.
Given my personal history with Seagate externals and their high failure rate for me and marginal 1 year warranty, I try to buy Western Digital. But this price is tempting to overcome my bias and grudge against Seagate that's for sure...

Here's to hoping that the increased MTBF on the Exos X16 line really means something.

The GPU shortage plus sky-high crypto value have driven miners to other coins. Coins that could be mine via HDD.
HDD shortage will come hard and fast, would expect shortage to last about a year or more.
But recently, WD pulled a hat trick, mixing shingled magnetic recording (SMR) HDD into their NAS lineup. SMR HDD is about 100x slower when NAS is rebuilding failed drives. Now WD calls SMR HDD as their NAS lineup, and HDD (without SMR) as their NAS Pro lineup.
Enterprise grade of both WD and Seagate is very similar.
For consumer usage, there is no difference.
I personally would not compare historical record of one company to another.
I recommend comparing models or product lines.

Exos x16 is enterprise line, slightly higher sustained transfer and 2x MBTF than IronWolf Pro. The only thing Exos doesn't have is IronWolf's rescue service.
So, what's the reason in preferring IronWolf Pro?
