The comparison with the 5 amp 20v batteries that still use the smaller lithium cells that do not have the same discharge capability is true. There is a noticeable difference in power.

This is a Flexvolt Advantage too and it is around 40% more powerful when paired with a Flexvolt Battery.
This deal bundled with 5AH battery means that it will only just be as powerful as the 996 when used with the 5AH battery.
That said, either the 996 or 998 has all the power one needs and why the extra long handle.... you will need it. You have straight or hammer drilling with an adjustable clutched setting for driving screws, lags, etc. On occasion, we have even used the SDS plus masonry bits in this, but the straight shank are probably better.
All in all, this is a powerful, versatile tool that might be a touch much for the average homeowner.... but this is a decent price before the shipping costs of $15.40 for me, for the tool, 5amp battery, DCB101 charger that says is 4amps that the DCB115 replaced and bag.
No, 998 (which the drill in the ad is 999) has "Power Detect"... description of power detect is accurate tho... tool connect is their Bluetooth anti theft stuff... 999 can get benefit from their flex volt batteries
Considering the Grainger kit came to $223 out the door, vs $149 for the bare impact wrench, I'm essentially paying $74 for the 5AH battery kit. Worth the hassle? They seem to go for $100. Or should I just stick with my 2AH's for now? I don't use my power tools super often. DIYer

Also, I use the 60v in my XR's (especially the angle grinders... they gobble batteries fast)... never had an issue.
The larger cells used have the ability to release more watts per time frame that the so called Flexvolt ready tools can utilize. Depending on the model, the XR grinder may or may not be able to use the higher release batteries.
For the OP, the 996 has all the power most would ever need, but the 998 and 999 are steadily improving to utilize the increasingly usable power of the larger amp and larger cell batteries.
That said, shipping with a 5amp, small cell battery is going to do nothing with the upgraded tool over the 996.... but, if the same price, why not?
The original ad was a bit confusing with both 998 and 999 mentioned.... the 998 we have has blue tooth capability we don't use.
According to DeWalt, that granted is not updated all that often, the 998 [dewalt.com] has "Power Detect" that can produce 29% more with an 8amp 20v over the 5amp 20v and the 999 can produce 42% more power with the 6amp Flexvolt over the 5amp 20v. Not exactly comparing apples to apples, they seem to be very similar to me.... but I have not chased down the replacement parts to verify.
If anyone has used the 996, it has all the power most people need.... the long side handle is there for a valid reason. That said, this 999 with a 5amp 20v is about the same in power, with the option to use a larger battery for more power.
The anti-theft appears to be a bit of a misnomer.... you can find the tool on the job site if close, but once the tool leaves the building, blue tooth has it's limitations. It is more like a key finder and why we don't even mess with it.

The power difference with the newer batteries is really obvious to me when drilling with current XR series motors. Enough that I'm slowly upgrading my older high-end DeWalts to current gen tools and batteries.
