Recommend stay away: the 13" non-Alcantara models are the ones where the screens crack by themselves and Microsoft will try to get out of covering it. I wouldn't trust Costco to not claim it's user damage either.

Microsoft acknowledged the issue. What's unknown is if it was resolved in later builds. I imagine it would have to have been, as the new SL4 shares the same hardware and design as the SL3.

At least for me, aside from long hold times due to COVID, Costco customer service has always been phenomenal.

I bought this same unit from Costco when it was $1149. Initial setup was easy and fast. While completing initial windows updates, there must of been 10-15 windows updates to install, during installation the keyboard was on fire and hot to the touch. I assume this was because the processor was working overtime to install all the updates. I then stumbled upon the screen cracking issues. I decided to return this to costco and picked up the surface laptop 4 from the Microsoft store as Costco does not have the AMD model with 16GB for sale, so I bought it from the Microsoft store instead with the extended warranty. The initial setup on the laptop 4 was also very fast and the keyboard was not hot to the touch at all and it felt just a tad quicker. Let's hope laptop 4 does not have the screen cracking issues.

Unfortunately there is no evidence they fixed the cause for screen cracking. The processors seem like nice upgrades though.

I would really stay away from Microsoft Surface/Surface Book. Even the Surface Book 3 is having the same overheating, battery expanding, screen cracking issues from the previous models. They still haven't figured out a battery solution for the surface screen. The heating and battery expansion issue is accelerated if you use a Microsoft Dock, since your battery is always charging.

I'm currently going back and forth with Microsoft support with no luck. There is no repair option. They are aware of this issue. The only resolution they offer is sending you a refurbished model in exchange for $600. Not a new model, the same refurbished model which is likely to have the same issue in a year or two.

Microsoft's TOS upon using their devices makes you agree to their arbitration clause, making it extremely difficult to sue them. Surprised a class action hasn't formed yet. You can always file small claims but look luck actually collecting.

I'm not sure if the surface laptop has this issue because it isn't a touch screen but you should triple check. Either way, our family won't be buying any Microsoft products anymore. This is our 2nd surface book with this same issue.

Quick google search will show you how severe this problem is.

Still those 2016 bezels though

Even newborn Chinese PC makers know how to make thin bezels, but $1.5 trillion company that pioneered PC still makes laptops with bezels like it 5 year old tech.

You get better specs, better design, better looking, without this horrendeous bezel and with USB-C charging for same price HP Spectre X360, I have ordered in Blue, the only down side is, it has almost 3-4 weeks wait time, but that'sfine.

I liked the design on these.... in 2019. For this price you can get comparable build quality but with thunderbolt 3, an adequate sized SSD, etc. I think Dell XPS/Thinkpad is a better buy.

I just took my SB to the store and they replaced the entire laptop on the spot. This is for the expanding battery.

Was your SB still in warranty? What happens if it is out of warranty?

I just picked up a pair of Surface Laptop 3 i5 10th gen, 16gb, 256GB for $799.99 each - tax free week in Florida. Sorry no link as item no longer appears on their website. The Costco item number is 1557660.

This is a discontinued item since the SL4 is out. But a decent deal none the less.
