However, I am really tempted to roll the dice for Feb or Mar of next year. Perhaps that is enough time for them to work out a proper scheme to welcome gaijin.

Please read the terms carefully. Since March 2020, insurance providers are treating Covid as a "foreseen" event. Coverage explicitly excludes travel disruptions due to covid lockdowns etc.

I went from December 15th-January 15 about 15 years ago. It rained more than it snowed, and the snow I experienced in Tokyo/Kyoto never stuck.
The cold did not bother me at all, wore a pea coat and a scarf (perhaps a stocking cap on rare occasions) and was happy as a clam.
Confirmed $204 Feb 15 - March 8.
Even if you're allowed in there will most likely be around a 2 week quarantine even if you're vaccinated. You might end up paying more for food and lodging. Not to mention God forbid you catch COVID. You might have to end up paying hospital bills and have to stay longer than intended.
Also the situation is constantly changing, even if you're clear you might not be able return to the US if the variants cause another wave.
For me under normal circumstances I'd totally jump on this deal. However I think this is a situation where airlines are getting desperate. They're unfortunately bleeding out lost potential income because of the pandemic. They're taking a big loss with this deal. They're banking on people thinking it's cheap and buying, then it's too late to cancel and get a refund if they can use it. Even for those that do end up traveling they're going to have to purchase a return flight unless they want to be stuck at the airport until their return trip.
I guess if you have the extra cash then go for it. As for me I cannot waste that much amount of money for the chance of a cheap flight.
