You can't currently enter Japan as a tourist. If you have a reason to be there (not sure criteria) you are still subject to very strict two week quarantine. I doubt foreign visitors will be allowed in the country this year based on how slow the vaccine rollout has been there and now a major uptick in cases in the country.

However, I am really tempted to roll the dice for Feb or Mar of next year. Perhaps that is enough time for them to work out a proper scheme to welcome gaijin.

You'd have to be really optimistic or a moron to buy non-refundable international tickets to anywhere right now.

Phenomenal deal with caveats. Beware if you're going for vacation - you are hedging your bets on whether or not they are allowing tourists access by then. Hopefully they will with vaccination.

Current rules in Japan: foreign nationals will be turned away if you are there for tourism/travel. https://www.japan.travel/en/coronavirus/ https://www.insidekyoto.com/can-i...-japan-now

Currently no entry into Japan is allowed for tourists. Once they do allow entry they will almost certainly require proof of vaccination, as will most if not all international travel.

If it doesn't happen by 1st quarter 2022, do they just give you airline credit or something?

I had similar ticket on Air Canada that was supposed to fly on 7th of this Month PIT to NRT for $165! I called and first Expedia gave me credit to use on Air Canada. But they are offering refunds for vouchers on the their site, other airlines will do same. I had just changed my voucher to refund on Rayan Air from last spring. Book furthest date out and if stuck with credit make sure you picking US based airline so you can reuse it easier.

If you've never been to Japan, this is the better of the two airports to arrive/depart at in Tokyo.

No, one stop. Most are domestic ORD (Chicago), LAX (Los Angeles), DFW (Dallas) or IAH (Houston). Some are two stops with the other in Vancouver.

United told us to board a flight that was delayed because of storms. Told us if we missed our connecting international flight they would take care of me and my very pregnant wife and put us up in a hotel. When we arrived and missed the connection, the person at the United desk said that wasn't true and essentially told me to go fark myself when I protested. That's how we got to stay 24 hours in an airport that almost made me miss the conference I was supposed to attend. I will never fly United as long as I draw breath. I rather swim to Japan.

A lot of people skip right over the actual town of Narita, there is an AMAZING temple a few blocks from the JR station, the Naritasan Shinshoji Temple. If you fly into NRT get off at the Narita station (IIRC two stops from when you get on the train at the airport). Entry to the temple was free when I was there and it is HUGE. It has picnic tables, koi ponds and gazebos.

Visiting that temple right after getting out of the airport set the tone for my entire trip a few years ago. The temple area is huge and there is very few people.

All that being said, wait until you can ACTUALLY enter Japan to purchase any flights.
