For those who have a Costco membership and are considering this item, I highly recommend the Massimo e-coolers that they sell. I've had the 42 quart version for two years now and I use it frequently on camping trips without any issues. For the first year I used it as a spare fridge, running it pretty much non-stop.

Temperature regulation, no need for consumables, no water leak chance, no wet food, etc. Want me to keep going?
Just unplug your fridge and fill with ice...you'll see why

This fridge and all other compressor fridges in this price range are manufactured by Alpicool. They may have slight differences between brands, but for customer service reasons I'd go with one directly from Alpicool or get the Massimo from Costco. If possible look for one with the LG compressor.

Compressor fridges are much better than thermoelectric coolers because they use much less electricity and can maintain any temperature. Themoelectric ones can only get about ~30 degrees below the ambient temperature so on an 80 degree day you could only get the fridge down to ~50 and that's not even worth it.

Full-time van life here. Been using the Yeti Hopper for the last 6 months, it's real cheap to fill it with a $3 bag of ice every 4 days. Takes up less space. Easy to lug around camps. This seems nice but I'm not sure I want something draining my 1000w Goal Zero battery every minute of every day, I feel like that would diminish its lifespan. Plus I tend to park in the shade, so even my 200w solar wouldn't keep me topped off for long and if the battery dies my food spoils. If my ice melts I buy more ice. The only convincing reason to upgrade I've heard is being able to store ice cream. Keeping food from getting soggy is easy to avoid (some of y'all haven't heard of ziplock apparently). I'm open to it but I'd need firsthand experience from other campers that it's actually an improvement over a cooler.
The thing with van life is there is no one size fits all, so if a $300 yeti works for you then that is great. This may work great for others. A lot of people try to create arguments just for the sake of justifying their past purchases. Which I'm not saying you are doing but there really isn't much downside going the Costco route because of costco's great return policy. Buying this amazon one is more risky than costco's because of the return policy. For me personally a fridge would be better than a cooler since I am hella lazy and wouldn't want to haul ice every few days and empty the water every few days. Also I would be too lazy to wrap everything in zip lock bags and I personally don't like to waste ziplock bags. I also would not want to drain a goal zero battery so I would probably buy a cheap extra battery for the fridge. I also like to park under the shade since it makes a more comfortable temperature and also increases the longevity of the car. To solve this problem, I would make the solar panel detachable so it could be mounted in a sunny spot while the car is under the shade. There are actually smart solar panel systems that follow the sun like a sunflower with elevated and angled mounts but that is different from the detachable solar panel. If I were doing the detachable route, I would add protective sleeves around the wires for added protection and stealth (like we could put the panels in the tree we are currently parked under) and add camoflauge paint for the protective sleeves and the bottom of the solar panels. Just food for thought

Probably a stupid question, but would this be super risky to bring on a pontoon boat while fishing in the bay? There are spots in the boat that don't usually get splashed, but wondering if these things will crap out in the off chance that some splash does hit it.

I suppose bringing this and just securing a towel over it might be sufficient protection, though.

Why not just use a cooler with ice
Why don't you look at what this unit does and then look at a regular cooler... I'm sure you will figure it out.

Nice deal, I just built a big LiFePO4 battery and I can't wait to not have to deal with ice anymore. That shouldn't be something that needs explained to anyone. I have never even owned one of these yet and the advantages are pretty obvious. Got to consider the Costco route for the return policy but this is the same fridge that the CheapRvLiving guy uses.

Sounds like driving to town to buy ice is a price you would gladly pay to have fancy name brand items. Yes, this will put extra charge cycles on your $1300 1000w lithium-ion battery. But that is a totally ridiculous battery.

I've seen a few comments/reviews saying that it can run off solar. How does that work? Do you need to have a GoLabs or Jackery to run in conjunction with the solar panel? Or is there a direct solar connection?
I'm no expert, but I converted my RV to solar and learned a lot about it. I really don't think there's a way you can run it off just a solar panel alone.

For a basic traditional and expandable setup it goes solar panels connected to a charge controller (regulates the charge for the battery's sake) that's connected to the battery then usually connected a converter that converts the dc energy produced to ac for normal outlets. Cigarette outlets and USB outlets can be run without a converter and are more efficient because you loose a little energy in the conversion (instead of the converter connected to the battery you could just have efficient USB and cig outlets).

For just a fridge you could have just a solar panel connected to a jackery because the jackery is basically all the parts combined other than the panel (charge controller, battery and converter with outlets usually some pure dc outlets too) but I don't think it's expandable or anything. The main limiting factor is they are only rated for a few hundred watt output. But if that's all you need, it would be a sweet and simple setup. From quickly looking it seems like most need an adapter to accept the wire connections (MC4) that come from a standard solar panel, but most foldable panels come with the solar generator compatible hookup. One thing to keep in mind is the Jackeries all come with the "higher end" components such as MPPT charge controlling and a lithium battery.

After typing this I found this video of a guy directly connecting things to solar panels. He just twists the ends of wires together. Kind of redneck, but I guess it works. I wouldn't do it myself but if your interested fast forward to 1 min -

I have an older Coleman 12v cooler and if that dies I'll get another one!
Super handy going to Costco (I live an hour away) throw it in the cooler plug it in.
It's not for everyone but until you've used one it's really a hard sell. I got my cooler free, my dad bought it with good intentions and never used it.

It comes in handy a lot of time sometimes a traditional cooler is the better choice.

Wow, these are actually quite affordable.. Prior to covid when we travel, it was two coolers with ice.. and they get heavy as chit.. like we'll drive up to boston and get food and having to use zip lock bags to prevent water from getting in. Ice takes up like half the cooler if you have long drive.. lose half the space.

My question is the trunk has a higher rated cigarette adapter.. any know if I can use a splitter and put two if these in the trunk ?
I think it 180w max at 15amp. I can even bring this into the hotel as second fridge.. might just look for the biggest one if I can't get 2
