It's been this price multiple times previously, though still a good deal.

There's no need to jump on this at this price unless you really want an a7iii and have access to a EDU account.

Personally I shoot on this camera like a ton of other SD users and love it. It's a great full frame camera and keeps professional work cheap using something like Tamron glass. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to get more seriously into photography, but not totally break the bank on your budget getting setup.

Thumbs up from me. 👍👍👍

Photography is just as much about technique and knowledge as it is about the hardware.
The difference is modern smartphones remove the need for proper knowledge and technique to produce fairly nice photos.
Too many people think buying an expensive camera will make them take better pictures. It wont. You as a person have to be able to use the camera effectively.
All else equal an unskilled individual will take substantially better pictures on a phone.

And a casual driver will drive much better in a Toyota Camry than a Formula One car, lol.

I've used this camera several times; belongs to a friend. When I visit him and his family, I pick it up with his zeiss 50mm 1.4. Produces decent pictures. Tends to be on the brown side in reproduction. I also found the scrunched up buttons annoying and making adjustments was time consuming. I probably need more time to get acquainted with the setup, but to be honest, I'm so comfortable with my D810 with battery grip that everything is now intuitive to me. Yes, it's heavier, but it's a small sacrifice in exchange for fluid and quick changes to capture the moment before it gets away.
While the Nikon ergonomics are better, it is learned behavior. You would probably adapt with time. However, when I go mirrorless, I'll likely stick with Nikon Z myself. Waiting for more lenses.

Computational photography has made the "automatic" mode on phone cameras fairly idiotproof. Computational photography is not well-leveraged in the photography market (yet). So your "auto" mode on a camera like the A7III is going to control things like exposure and white balance, and it will generally try to find a face and prioritize its exposure. It WON'T do some of the more heavy-handed stuff that iPhones and such do, which amounts to creative post-processing baked into the image.

That'll come to the photography market, but there's a lot less R&D in this area, because there's less demand and because these cameras don't just happen to have bleeding-edge silicon in them like phones do. For now if you want to dynamically adjust sharpness or exposure in a subject-aware manner with a camera like the A7III, you're doing it in post, and in most cases you're doing it yourself.

One thing is for sure, a "real" camera is a tool with MUCH greater creative control, and with much more ability to produce a high quality image than any phone. That's not elitism, it's just a fact. Perhaps someday we'll get cell phone cameras that can truly accomplish what you'd get from a 12-1000mm f/1.0 macro lens, but we're not there yet. So some of us haul around 10lbs worth of camera gear, cause we want those results.
Also sensor size. I want at least 1", APC or better FF. Phones may get there. And likely get even bigger.

For $1500 , this vs something else for 4k videos?
Fuji x-t4. 4k 60fps 10 bit internal. Sony has better auto focus but the fuji is a better all arounder. Fuji x-s10 4k 30fps with lens for under $1500 is another good hybrid. Both have ibis, 240fps hd, and are easy to switch between photo and video.

The a7iv has been "coming" for a long time, and with the current semiconductor shortages going around I highly doubt we will see the a7iv in the next year.

This is the only rationally priced Sony camera that has come out in the past half decade. And to the naked eye in most scenarios, its video quality is essentially equivalent to the price-gouging, overpriced a7S III that fanboys waited for endlessly, and hyped up on cue.

Is your only requirement 4k? You could get by with a GoPro if you really wanted to.

Samsung S21 Ultra takes better pictures than Sony A7iii in day light. For casual picture taking, not for professional work.
As a DSLR owner and an S21U owner, smartphone cameras are definitely getting better, but they still can't quite compete with full frame DSLR/mirrorless cameras, especially when paired with a high quality lens. For most people I do think the S21U is probably more than enough camera for casual shooting though.

The one exception is low light video performance. The A7S III beats pretty much every other camera on the market under $5,000 thanks to its dual native ISO.

Agreed, but there are diminishing returns where it matters because color rendition gets incredibly ugly wherever a scene isn't properly lit (and the overall quality suffers along with it). Light sensitivity at near darkness is a barely valuable feature.

4K 120fps - 10 bit internal - 16 bit raw through HDMI - No recording limits, Articulating screen. Please stop.

Hi there fanboy who lives in a world of theory:
  1. 4k 120fps: for shooting bridezillas in slow motion? How often? And isn't it just your wedding videos anyway?
  2. 10-bit internal: you don't color grade to any extent it matters; and the codec is so terrible that 10-bit fidelity is moot
  3. 16-bit RAW through HDMI: right, you've gotten an external recorder to make your footage look 0.000000001% better, still bogged down by bad Sony color science, poor bitrate, gigantically bloated file formats (compared to BRAW), etc.
  4. No recording limits: uh, just start and stop, unless you're sitting on a throne of high command and couldn't possibly sink that low

Better than Iphone?

I saw so many guys who claim those cameras are for real photographying hobbiest or pros, but end up with worse pictures than iPhone does. Just let them go away.
Sure, let us know when you use your iphone to take actual wedding pictures or photoshoot of yours or anyone you know!

I own a DSLR and an S21U 256GB with a Samsung and a pen case. The difference in the quality is like a power lifter and a body builder. The definition, the esthetic, the look, etc, stop speaking nonsense 🙄
