It's been this price multiple times previously, though still a good deal.

There's no need to jump on this at this price unless you really want an a7iii and have access to a EDU account.

Personally I shoot on this camera like a ton of other SD users and love it. It's a great full frame camera and keeps professional work cheap using something like Tamron glass. I highly recommend it for anyone looking to get more seriously into photography, but not totally break the bank on your budget getting setup.

Thumbs up from me. 👍👍👍

Photography is just as much about technique and knowledge as it is about the hardware.
The difference is modern smartphones remove the need for proper knowledge and technique to produce fairly nice photos.
Too many people think buying an expensive camera will make them take better pictures. It wont. You as a person have to be able to use the camera effectively.
All else equal an unskilled individual will take substantially better pictures on a phone.

And a casual driver will drive much better in a Toyota Camry than a Formula One car, lol.

If I currently have an APS-C Sony mirrorless, would I need new lenses to support full frame on this camera?
First in regard to your aps-c question. I would not use this camera with those lenses. Your megapixels will be about 11 in aps-c. You would be better off getting a better lense unless you eventually are going all FF. not apples to apples but I have the a7riii that we use for amateur landscape. It is an AMAZING camera. This is probably better for those not doing much large scale outdoor shots though as you don't need the extra resolution and the a7iii will have better low light performance per reviews. Pair this with a relatively cheep tamron and I think this would be great too. I also have a Sony a6000 because I wanted to try something lighter/smaller for long hikes. If you have and a6xxx and don't want to shell out the serious money for full frame camera and FF lens look at upgrading to the new tamron aps-c lens. (17-70). I have not used it yet and know it has its flaws but- I have compared the the Sony 18-135 on the a6000 with the FF tamron trio on same camera and the tamron lenses give a way superior photo (same shot outdoors on tripod a few minutes apart). Finally to those who are saying phone camera is good enough. If all you are doing is very small photos or online, I agree with you. If you want to enlarge, resolution is terrible (did the same test with outside shot with my photo above with iPhone 11. With same zoom, the iPhone just made me cringe, a6000/ 18-135 was moderately good if you don't pixel peep, a6000 with tamron made me smile and enjoy photography and the a7riii with tamron made me say. *%#+ THAT IS NICE!

This is a good/decent price. But relatively speaking, 25% off the introductory price is not a great deal compared to other Sony cameras, for example the A7R IV which is a year younger and currently discounted by 35%.

Hi there fanboy who lives in a world of theory:
  1. 4k 120fps: for shooting bridezillas in slow motion? How often? And isn't it just your wedding videos anyway?
  2. 10-bit internal: you don't color grade to any extent it matters; and the codec is so terrible that 10-bit fidelity is moot
  3. 16-bit RAW through HDMI: right, you've gotten an external recorder to make your footage look 0.000000001% better, still bogged down by bad Sony color science, poor bitrate, gigantically bloated file formats (compared to BRAW), etc.
  4. No recording limits: uh, just start and stop, unless you're sitting on a throne of high command and couldn't possibly sink that low
Lol wut? Fanboy was your first big swing and a miss.

All high end features on cameras have diminishing returns and are only useful to a select subset of users. But for those who need that of which other models don't offer the price is worth it.....no matter how hard it is for you and your limited ability to understand the usefulness.

From wedding videos to badly produced vanity narrative films that no one will see, "the proof is in the pudding" whether you "need" these barely perceptive feature upgrades. So, to repeat: you don't need the a7S III. Get the a7 III or wait for the a7 IV which will exceed the a7S III at a much lower price (and will make the gullible early adopters cry into their pillows).

Color science is terrible on this one. I sold it just for that reason.

I supports crop lenses in cropped mode. You need to enable in the camera menu or zooming otherwise you'll see some black bars

So many elitist photographers here talking like dslr and mirrorless cameras dont have auto mode like an iPhone does. These cameras will generally take better pictures than smart phones, especially if it has HDR mode feature available, which is also available for newer smart phone models now. It doesn't take a genius to play around with the aperture, shutter speed, and iso. Sure theres a lot of techniques to learn, but photography isn't rocket science like some elitists claim. Theres a lot of trial and error like every other hobby.
No, photography is art of composing. To be a great one, needs serious gift and talent and practice. Just like drawing: a pencil is enough and it is not rocket science.

Is this deal really worth it if you don't have an a7 already? Best buy has this plus the lens on sale for 1899. At this price plus the lens 399.99 it's about tbe same price.

The overlooked gem on this deal is the A9. I owned a A7III and now the A9. At $2598 it is an amazing camera for a really good price. Focus and lock on tracking are insanely good. If you are shooting any action, this is a great option. 20FPS blackout free shooting is real on this one. On the A7III at high+ the camera does have blackouts so you do not see the full action through the viewfinder. The A9 stacked sensor has a faster readout so it gives you a better experience at full speed. The EVF is also much cleaner than the A7III. It cost more but gives you so much more in performance. I am not a video shooter, so I don't really care about those specs.

Handling of the camera is pretty much the same on both. Other than an added dial, the bodies are the same. If you have any long lens, get a grip to add on it balances the camera and is is easier to hold.

I never understand why people come on the camera body sales and bash the item for what it is. I pass by 100's of items on SD and never look at the comments. If I don't like the product it occupies less than a second of my time and is forgotten.

I like your analogy. What I love about photography is that I can learn something new every day. It is a journey. The more you do it, the more you find there is to learn. I can do action and sports, but ask me to do a landscape I fumble and fail. It takes a different mindset. Sure I can take snapshots with the best of them, but true landscape photographs.....that takes talent. Same for portraits, there is art to that. Not everyone is an artist. The camera is just a tool. And once you think you mastered the camera, add in flash, and multi flash.....

The A7III is really a different camera. It is a Sony E Mount, but they really knocked it out of the park with the A7III. It is 3 yrs old and still relevant in the fast tech crazy market. There are a ton of video spec improvements. But I don't shoot video. Focus area is now almost the entire frame. Focus and tracking are much improved. The sensor as a whole was a new design, but still the same size as the original A7. Battery life, that one is HUGE. The newer Z batteries are great. I easily get a full day of shooting on one. Over a thousand shot and still power to spare. I had one and liked it, but moved up to the A9 on one of these deals. I shoot manly sports and action, so I needed/wanted the focus, tracking, and fps the A9 brings to the table. I took some amazing photos with the A7III. On the first shot I pulled from the camera I was sold and knew I made the right choice. My A9 makes me smile every time I pull it out.

The A7IV is rumored to be announced in the fall, and possibly late year release. Rumors only. Expect around a 2K price and no EDU deals for a while. I am going to assume it will be an awesome camera.

Focus camera has it for $1458. Are they a good website to order from? Separately should I just wait for the A7iv?

Yes. I have bought a few Sony cameras and Sigma lenses from them. I am waiting for the Sony 200-600mm to have 20% education discount. It only has 10% discount at the moment.

Is there any additional discount with lens kits (ie 24-105)? Or is it body only?
