Great projector for the money. Epson 5050UB is great all-rounder but goes for 3K retail, 2.5K refurbished. This is a previous model. 4K enhanced through pixel shifting. Superior lens and color to similar priced projectors.

edit. nm. I read your post wrong, I guess you know it's 5040

My Epson 3500 died just yest after a power surge, so is the 1k extra for the 5050 worth it? I'm thinking prob not, but haven't seen them side by side.

Great projector! I bought it pre-pandemic for $1150 and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again at that price. Not sure about $1500 but these are weird times. It might not have all the bells and whistles of a 4K projector but the image quality gets me 95% to a movie theater!

is there a real break down of epson pixel shifting vs dlp mirror shift? ive usually had epsons but i feel like the dlp shift is going to be a better shift.

The 1060 [epson.com] is a good deal at $399 for those on a budget looking for high brightness.

That one also was one of the best deals out there. Currently refurb is $2500.
I've started with 1.5k budget to get to 3800. Extra $600 would have been a rea stretch to me. The front page 4100 was just $70 less than this.
Personally I've decided to try $500 2150 as a first projector. While I was doing my research it sold out. Then I went for benq 2050a instead. But reading reviews from 2018 and MSRP was $70 more than what I paid for refurbished. Yes, the times are weird and prices went through the roof.

yep. Prices on some "luxury" items are insane. You should see the used corvette market right now...

Yeah that was a crazy combo of brand new mid-engine architecture along with very low supply. Then you get the weird purists who then feel the vette might be going weird ways and picking up all the older FR models.

I inherited a sony 45es projector with low hours so it's going strong but the want for a laser projector is strong. Can't justify it though.

Epson does 2-way shifting so gets halfway to 4K. Some other projectors have 4-way shift which produces true 4k, and though not the same 4k image as the original input, in practice you can't tell.

General consensus is that Epson's not-quite-4k has better subjective image quality than most/all cheaper projectors that product an actual 4k image via pixel shifting. It's less to do with the pixel shifting itself, and more to do with better contrast, better HDR handling, real/perceived brightness, etc.

Is it worth it vs 65 inch budget TV?

Apples and oranges. I use a 65" TV most of the time, but pulling down a 120" screen for movie night or game night makes for a lot of fun.
