Series S is a good value for consumers that don't mind not having a native 4K resolution.
Pro tip: Xbox Live 12-month cards will convert 1:1 to Game Pass Ultimate. It's possible to pay ~ $60 or less per card and get up to 36 months saving over $360. Redeem the codes first, then subscribe to the first month of GPU for $1 offer.

Cant disagree more, it's total junk, and a reason though even 75% of Xbox produced are Series X, the Series S is always the one in stock. Despite the dumb Xbox brass kept reiterating that Series S is the mainstream option, meaning it should sell more, not 75% less and still cant sell out.
I'm a huge Xbox fanboy, and Series S might be the biggest blunder they've made possibly ever. Very decent chance they will lose to PS5 simply because of Series S. it will confuse consumers and make xbox be perceived as less powerful than ps5, even though series x is actually more powerful. It also made MS not make a Series X DE for 399, because that would have made the Series S look like even more of a joke value by compare. (which, it is) So now they actively handicaps themselves to support this turd. On top of all that it confused people with all the stupid Series naming, where they'll rather just go buy the very simple "PS5" that only has one version and everybody knows what it is.
I like Phil Spenser but it's hard to overstate what a bad idea Series S was.
Buy for a kid, maybe. that's it. Even then, hard sell given the joke storage included. After formatting you'll have 300 GB left. Thats enough for 3 full size games. Maybe 1. It's very likely that you wont be able to install the full Call of Duty that year within this generation, as the full COD install currently is already over 250GB, and trust me, file sizes are only going to get much, much bigger. They always do, we arent even using next gen assets yet.
In 2024 if you buy Call Of Duty. you probably wont be able to install all of it on this box, even if you have nothing else installed.
My main issue with the Series S is that there are less Xbox One games being rendered at 1080p than I would've expected. Apparently unless they're optimized it will default to the Xbox One S version rather than the One X like I would have assumed since it is technically more powerful overall.
I'm still planning on adding a PlayStation 5 at some point soon, but having an active two-year subscription to Game Pass Ultimate makes me not want to return it.
Edit: Also Microsoft's approach with Xbox Series S was to hit a $299 price point. If it was just as powerful but $399 like the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition I would have probably waited to get a Series X with a disk drive, or a PS5 for that matter.

Won't you have to "hack" it to do that?
These latest consoles are basically gaming PC's, sold at extremely reasonable prices.
No you just purchase a one time $19 microsoft developer account and your good, search on youtube for how to videos, its took me less than 5 min to get it and login. Here is a site that shows you too https://arstechnica.com/gaming/20...owerhouse/

This is really interesting. Most people on SD have been touting it as a good buy. It's interesting to see someone go completely the other way. A lot of youtube reviews also say it's a good buy and how it's perfect for most people. And I'm not trying to say you're wrong whatsover, it's just nice to see a differing opinion because the last time I was in the xbox ecosystem was the xbox 360.
I already have a PS5 but was really considering the Series S to take advantage of Game Pass. I have no need for an Series X, but so many games go on sale here and someone always responds with "on game pass"
can it run gamecube games well? the shield tv runs them like crap
The Xbox Series S and X run a custom Ryzen 7 like chip, if 4700, 4750G can run emulators with vega 8 integrated graphics, the xbox series hardware has 20 on S and 58 cores, which keeps the frame rate at a steady 30fps and 60fps for games on dolphin and PS2 emulation. I have not seen PS3 added to retroarch yet.

is dolphin better optimized then? the shield tv version runs like poop. I assume you have to use the dolphin core through retro arch
