The hate comes from how the business is run. Cricket has crippled the capabilities of their machines since they started and tried to put things behind a paywall. My mom had one of the first models from when they sold cartridges with designs of shapes that could cut instead of just letting you hook it up to a computer. There's a hack that you can do to make that work, which we set up for my mom, but cricket didn't like it and sued 2 companies for bypassing their cartridge system.

More recently, cricket has sold people machines and then tried to cripple them by moving everyone over to a monthly subscription that already bought their product.

They make cool machines, but they are a pretty scummy company.
Unless you're a diehard Cricut brand only crafter, you're better off getting one of the third party sets which will give you much more bang for your buck.
fark Cricut. Scummy-ass, backstabbing brand.

How does this "permanent vinyl" compare to the alternative?

I like cricut permanent vinyl for my projects but apparently there are a lot of cricut haters out there. My cricut vinyl projects have always come out great.

I have a Cricut Maker and haven't noticed anything crippled. I'm pretty good with vector -based software and I just make my own images. What's been removed?

I had bought the original for my wife and it sat around for a year until I discovered cutting vinyl and the hack to connect to a computer. After making back all my money selling decals, I bought a real 24" cutter that doesn't rely on sheets or cartridges. Went from craft junk to something that allowed me to make money faster and easier.

Also buying this "cricut" 12" vinyl is not worth it. Just order rolls of Oracal 651 or 631 which is what this is.

Buying longer rolls of Oracal 651 is a much better deal if you know what colors you want to use.

They aren't moving over everyone to subscription. They reversed that decision. They aren't very well run though. That's for sure.
