Any why do they do this? Because people leave other carriers for good deals but most people don't want to deal with the hassle of switching, so why take the revenue hit. It's all about the incentive and subscriber number game. I don't like it either, but it's pretty clear why.
Folks used to abuse this...myself included :-(...when it didn't require a new account (mostly non-iPhones). Totally makes sense why they do it: Any prepayment is just credit applied to your account, so if you had existing lines, previously you just didn't activate and the prepayment was applied to your actual lines. Pretty sure I got a Moto G7 Supra (Power) for $60 of prepayment (i.e. money I would have paid anyways) + $7 ebay number, to use with an existing cricket line.

I see the fine print shows, "Must bring your number to Cricket," so I assume I can't start from scratch with Cricket? I actually just want an iPhone SE (2020) to use as an iPod and don't care whether the phone is locked to a carrier because I won't have service on it as soon as the required months of service end.
Thanks,
Tofu Vic

Do these phones come in a plastic sealed Apple retail box? My last Visible phone did.
edit:
it also makes sense to buy it if you don't mind doing a referral trick. I purchased two phones and maxed out on referrals on two accounts. I have 22 days to unlock my iPhones and $150 additional unused credit on both accounts
