As someone who has the backlog the size of the great wall is this series under hyped or over rated? What about must have mods? Do these need to be played in order? Any other recommendations? Ty!

Underrated by a lot. I have over 200 hours accumulated in the stalker series and it is easily the most atmospheric and immersive experience Ive ever had (not counting vr games).
However, I will say if you are used to or are spoiled by the quality of life elements in recent games, this may not be for you. You will have to manage many things at once (kind of like in fallout 3 and NV) such as health, hunger, radiation, etc. You will have to be good at taking cover and learning how to read a map. There is no fast travel in vanilla Stalker but might be something you can easily mod if that's a deal breaker.
If you liked games such as Kingdom Come: Deliverance and the first Metro game, this might be for you.
in respect to mods, I would limit it to bug-fix mods like Zone Reclamation Project (SoC) and Sky Reclamation Project (CS) on your first play through. The former I think has fast travel built in
Stalker Anomaly which is completely free is something I would recommend after playing at least 1 of the games all the way through.
Thank you. Two non-critical observations (1j how spoiled are gamers that seeing any price that is not free seems like too much money; and (2) the prices given in SD listings for this site always seem to be gone by the time you get there -so you end up having to spend $2.50 or $3 if you want something listed at $0.78 . Now before you rail against my non-critical observation #2, I understand that $2.50 is not a lot of money and it is still a decent deal— but it is still more than 300% of the price given in the SD listing. So perhaps prices given for this particular site (which by the way is a legit site) should be given not as a single price but as a range (e.g., $0.78 to $3.00).
Is this OOS? I only see a lowest price of $1.82 before discount code.

Any advantage to grabbing the stalker trilogy on GOG if you already have it on steam?
DRM-free installers, soundtracks for each game (in FLAC and MP3), and other miscellaneous goodies. I can't recall in what way this may be true, but I believe the GOG version may be less prone to bugs (though you'll want to patch it like normal anyway). I attached a picture of what just the first game includes as a reference. Great series, if anyone is on the fence.

I enjoyed stalker, although it can be a bit.....sparse at times (at least in my play through and from what my failing memory recalls).
I've grabbed a lot of the GOG freebies on SD but haven't DL'd any of them yet, So, GOG newbie question;
Any advantage to grabbing the stalker trilogy on GOG if you already have it on steam?
